Self Confidence By Benedick Chan Therapist: Well, in a moment we are going to set a resource anchor for you, and the first thing that I want you to do is to think of a resource that would be very useful to you during the day. Once you have thought of a specific resource, I want you to give me a signal, like nodding your head. Client: (Nods his head.) Therapist: &nsp; That is right. (I pace his nod.) I would like to know what resource you have chosen. Client: Confidence. Therapist: Great. Confidence. This is very useful in your life. Right! Now let yourself fully reexperience that experience. See what you saw. Hear what you heard. Feel what you felt. (As I say this I place my left hand on his right shoulder.) Now, as you take a deep breath, feel the confidence flow from your head, your neck, your face, your heart, and your stomach. That's right. (I've observed his breathing had changed and I used the above sentence to pace his breath in order to arouse a more confident feeling.) (I looked for shifts in physiology which indicate that he was experiencing confidence. When I saw those shifts, I released my left hand.) Therapist:&nsp; When you are ready, just clear your mind. Now I want you to look around the room. Have you had lunch yet? (Break state.) Client: Yes, I had lunch. I had a hamburger. Therapist: That is a good comparison. Think of yourself as to a hamburger. You are like a giant to the hamburger. Full of wisdom. And as you face your comparison, you will eat them as a giant eats a hamburger. This is your confidence. Do you agree? (A metaphor) Client: Yes. I am as a giant full of wisdom and confidence. Therapist: That's right. Now look straight ahead and close our eyes. (When he had closed his eyes, I placed my left hand on his right shoulder in order to fire the 'confidence' anchor, and I observed if the same shifts in physiology which occurred for him when I set the anchor, was now occurring. My client shifted his physiology and breath rate as before. I knew I had succeeded. I removed my left hand from his right shoulder.) Therapist: Open your eyes and clear your mind. You felt very confident as I touched your right shoulder, didn't you? Client: It was a very interesting feeling..a warm feeling in my stomach. Therapist: I would like to make certain of your reaction. Please, close your eyes again. Client: (He closed his eyes and I fired the anchor again. The same physiology shifts occurred, including the change in his breath rate. I ensured that this was a successful anchor.) Therapist: Now, open your eyes. I want you to visualize yourself as you would be when you return to your office tomorrow morning. You will see yourself in this confident state. (I observed his eye movement. When his eyeball moved upwards to the right, I knew he had constructed his "tomorrow" picture. I then fired the resources anchor. His breathing rate changed again.) Client: I feel very confident. Therapist: Very interesting. Now picture yourself a week from now. Can you still feel the confidence as you walk into your office? The same confidence you feel now? (As my client visualized himself experiencing the same feeling of confidence a week into the future, I fired his anchor.) Client: I feel it. I feel very confident! Really! Therapist: That's right. That confidence is now yours. Thank you for allowing me to assist you.
