Realizing Potential Through Uncharted Waters

(Overcoming a Physical and Mental Challenge)

By Linda LaFleur

The client has been on Workman’s Compensation for eight months, now ready mentally but not physically, being forced to reenter the workforce only to be informed by his employer that he intends to file bankruptcy. Clients physical condition remains challenged due to injury limiting his abilities and his chances of finding employment in his field.

Observing client’s communication and perceptual style, I find him to be predominately visual, quickly glancing left to right with quick gestures, shallow and quick breathing and speech. Easily recreates scenarios from his viewpoint, is observant of others and plainly sees what his boss should have done to avoid the dilemma they are both presently facing. He appears auditory, outspoken, with reference to others not listening, heated arguments, shouting and noise on the job site. Body posture indicative of auditory, with head cocked, shoulders back and arms firmly folded in front. Behaviors style very much a director.

I begin by matching, mirroring and pacing techniques to develop rapport. Sitting straight and stiff, matching voice tone, volume and tempo, concentrating on breathing in an attempt to slow the pace gradually into a more relaxed state. As the breathing regulates the body and hand gestures seem to relax as well, the tone and tempo seem to slow down proportionally enough to create atmosphere conducive to discussion.

I now follow a pace, pace, pace-lead format focusing on cause and effect, emphasizing goals and objectives, rationalizing possibilities along with the global picture. Instilling confidence , reaffirming unlimited choices step by step. Helping him realize the feeling of accomplishment as he moves forward through incongruence toward a motivated direction.

I continue now, asking his permission, allowing me to direct him with techniques to instill positive changes in his future with Flash Imagery along with The Visual Squash exercise, beginning I believe with The New Behavior Generator.

Client seems to be receptive and willing to begin. It is my belief that visual techniques for this client will be most beneficial in realizing his potential through uncharted waters.
