Power Performance

By Jean B. Castagno-Popplewell

Set the stage:

At the time the client is filling out the questionnaire there will be a section asking them to describe in writing how they would like to see themselves performing their sport. During the verbal interview while reviewing this written sequencing with them, ask for detailed information having them verbally describe their performance to you.

With the Information Gathering and their Meta-Program complete you improvise this information into the technique.

Induction:

Once the client is comfortably settled in the chair ask them to focus their eyes on a point on the wall or ceiling. Direct their eyes to focus in the direction of the upper right hand at a 45 degree angle, for visual construction, and keep this focus. As they concentrate on this point repeat to them:

  1. Your eyelids are getting heavier and heavier, so heavy that you want to close them and allow them to relax completely. But, I want you to keep them open and to continue to concentrate on that point on the wall. Just ignore how heavy your eyelids feel and how they just want to close. You don't have to close your eyes so the muscles around your eyes can relax even more, just keep focusing on that point. Now, before I tell you to close your eyelids because they are so tired and want to close, put all your desires, dreams and wants (state what it is they are coming to the session for) right into that point and as you do close your eyes. As you close your eyes you will go just as deeper relaxed as your heavy eyelids are.
  2. Now I want you to imagine, visualize or pretend that you are at your place of practice (the baseball field) and you see yourself on the playing field warming up.
  3. I would like you to explain to me how you move your body and hold the bat when you are at home plate getting ready to hit the ball. Explain to me in all the minute details of what it is you do.

As they explain the mechanics of their body movements and different positions they go through while performing their task, ask them to describe how their body feels to them. (As they give the description ANCHOR this sensation).

Continue with descriptions as they associate with each of the senses and ANCHOR each.

  1. What does your body look like as it goes through the motions of (swinging the bat)?
  2. What sounds do you hear and associate with the motions of (swinging the bat)?
  3. What aromas and tastes come to your nose and tongue as you (swing the bat)?

Let them know that you are going to count them up using the count from 3 to 1. On the number one they will open their eyes and look at your finger on the right side of their heads. (Breaking state). Once they see your finger they will automatically close their eyes returning right back to this wonderful relaxation, going deeper each and every time.

  1. Once they have associated all the senses, have them now imagine, visualize or pretend that they are at home plate getting ready to hit the ball. As they are standing at home plate incorporate the Circle of Power. Associate all the senses and ANCHOR. Test anchor. (Break state)
  2. Have them create the pitch seeing it come toward them incorporating The Zone technique changing the speed of the ball according to their preference. Have them visualize, imagine or pretend that they have hit the ball (again, have them use The Zone technique with the speed of the ball) in whatever style is appropriate for them. As they are explaining this to you have them associate this experience with each of the senses and ANCHOR. Test anchor. (Break state).
  3. As they run the bases ask them to imagine, visualize or pretend they are running to home plate using the Circle of Power under their feet and The Zone technique. ANCHOR this experience with their senses. Test anchor. (Break state).
  4. Once they are home have them do an instant replay this time dissociated/as the observer. Repeat this procedure and at the points of hitting the ball, running the bases and reaching home plate have them associate the experience and ANCHOR. Test anchor. (Break state).

  5. Now have client do Future Pacing or Compelling Future Technique. Have your client imagine, pretend or visualize him/herself at a future game as you use each of the anchors.

  6. Once this is done successfully, leave the suggestion with your client that each and every time they go to a baseball game, they will automatically call up this power of performance, perfecting it more and more each and every time they practice, each and every time they play, feeling more and more confident and empowered.

Let them know that you are now going to count them up using the numbers 10 to 1. When they hear the number 1 and not before, they will open their eyes feeling refreshed, relaxed and empowered into this new ability to perform. Begin your count.
