Re: Pattern Interrupts . . . from Joseph Donahue & NFNLP From: Chuck Domm, Hypno-Reiki Grandmaster (age 54) Just a note regarding Pattern Interrupts from a very experienced fighter (647), former Green Beret, owner of 5 dojos, a Blackbelt, doorman, bodyguard. Pattern Interrupt works best of all even in most extreme conditions ... but congruency in carrying out the effect needs to get high grades. Pattern Interrupt buys time, and there are other factors that help like personal body size and willingness to carry through the act. For instance, I have interrupted gangs several times--consisting of groups of weapon (tire irons, bats, bottles) welding teens-to-twenties --- who were beating someone to death or breaking into a home to rob people. I screamed out like Atilla the Hun and became a "crippled hunch back" with twisted arms and hands, dragging my right foot behind me ... and never actually said a real word but shouted very loud with nonsense syllables. Everyone always stopped whatever they were doing. Some dropped their weapons and started backing away. Others held there ground to shout threats at me --- that if I got any closer they would kill me. I kept coming at them, dragging my foot, screaming maniacally and ended up chasing the gang away each time. Twice I have chased gangs into their home turf after midnight . . . which is not a bright thing to do but I got caught up in the excitement of being able to do it and scare 10-15 people away from their intended prey. These were not people who knew me nor knew of my reputation as a fighter. Several in each gang were my size (over 6', over 200 lbs.). But it is something else for the mind to go against a seriously deranged being who challenges a gang in the middle of their violence. In running rock concert security for stadium events, field events and night clubs, I learned a lot about "crowd behavior." When you are able to do a major "Pattern Interrupt" on a street gang or others, as long as you carry it through fully, the gang mind shifts from that of "being a gang" with large numbers supporting the mentality to that of "just me not wanting to deal with this big crazy man". The mind set shifts dramatically from "gang member who can't be hurt" to individual person who might be killed by an absolutely insane person. It must conjure up all the worst images of what could go wrong with an assault. I don't recommend this behavior except for the most extreme situation in which someone's life is at stake. Failure to carry it through could mean death to you. It will buy precious time for some help to arrive and in many instances it will thoroughly deter attackers ---- or they will shoot you just to get you out of the way. Evidently, the twisted image of a crazed monster is an archetypal thing dredged up from our deepest fear pit. I have successfully used this "survival technique" at least 8 times through my late teen years and late in my thirties, mostly in incidents in Baltimore's Inner City area.
