Captain’s Log:
It has been an exciting few weeks. I have been working on two new projects and completing a few other things that have been in the works for awhile. We also had a major computer crash; the hard drive had to be replaced but unfortunately, before we realized there was a problem some data was lost. So, please be patient as we may have to contact several of you requesting information (membership numbers, training completion dates, etc.) Unfortunately, a backup is only as good as the original information…and since ours was deteriorating as the drive was failing…you get the not-so-pretty picture.
I have been given the honor to be asked to teach at a high performance training for the military and police in February. Of all the NLP/Hypnosis experts out there, to be asked is an honor, and I look forward to the experience. I am also very excited about the cutting edge aspect that is being worked on Neuro-Kinetic development on speeding up learning and preventing cognitive overload. I plan on a conference call on some of things I learn that we can use in NLP!
Call for help! Anyone who has used NLP (especially at a Dr. Horton training) to overcome an addiction (alcohol, drugs, smoking, food, gambling) or bad habit that would be willing to be on camera for an upcoming product launch, please contact me ASAP (941) 408-8551!
NEW TRAINERS COURSE! The updated NLP Trainers course is finally ready for release. This course has all the old information and new technology that will help your trainings at all levels. Great for NLP, hypnosis, sales, and corporate trainers. If you have the older version, you can get the updated version for a super low fee. Call or email for details!
Since I have no extended travel the next few weeks I have taken a role in the musical Titanic. As many of you know, theater is a passion of mine and it has given me the chance to relight this desire. I am taking extra voice and dance classes, because as I say in the new trainers course, if one wants to excel at a skill (like theater or training) one must practice and get feedback from other experts! Christina has mentioned it is fun to see me so excited, and practicing these skills. I will let you know how it goes! We go up in March!
I am looking to do a class in California, around the Bay area. I will be in Oakland in April for the California Psychological Association Convention, so I would like to add a class at that time, if you have a school or a group that would like a training, contact us soon.
Also ATTACHED is the current member information sheet. PLEASE, ALL NFNLP MEMBERS, complete the form and return them to us for updating our database and our website's Membership Directory. Please complete the form ON YOUR COMPUTER, and email it back to me. By your typing the form, it will avoid errors due to handwriting and international name formats. We really appreciate your assistance.
Christina’s book, “The Forever Born” (a fantasy novel complete will angels, monsters, undersea worlds, space portals, psychic adventure, etc.), will be out later this month. It fell behind schedule due to getting the cover design she wanted. (Picky, picky, picky... She vetoed the first design and sent it back!) We had hoped to have it available for you at the NGH conference. We will have promotional cards with an excerpt on it for those who want a preview at our conference table. We will also take advance orders for those fantasy novel lovers out there. It will be available in standard print, large-print, and e-book format.
From The Road: This from George Bien (www.georgebien.com):
"Do first things first, and second things not at all." - Peter Drucker. In his book, "The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less", psychology professor Dr. Barry Schwartz gives us a lot evidence that we are faced with far too many choices on a daily basis which gives us an illusion of a multitude of options when few truly different ones actually exist. Drawing extensively on his finding from numerous studies, Dr. Schwartz shows that a bewildering number of choices floods our already exhausted brains, ultimately restricting instead of freeing us. A certain amount of choice can be liberating but according to Schwartz, too much is a treadmill, sometimes even triggering depression.
Dr. Schwartz says, "Too many exciting choices are my problem, it doesn't matter what choice I make, I'll always be disappointed that I didn't make all the other ones as well."
I sure can relate to that one! And here's one for you. I have a musician friend who's a full professor at a college. He's a brilliant guy, yet I've actually seen him paralyzed at the thought of making a decision. It's no wonder he's become a "decide-o-phobic."
Social psychologists Dr. Sheena Iyengar of Columbia University Business School, and Dr. Mark Lepper, PhD of Stanford University, were the first to empirically demonstrate the downside of excessive choice. In a 2000 paper in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (Vol. 79, No. 6), they showed that when shoppers are given the option of choosing among smaller and larger assortments of jam, they show more interest in the larger assortment. But when it comes time to pick just one, they're 10 times more likely to make a purchase if they choose among six rather than among 24 flavors of jam.
Just think about the choices of toothpaste. Must I choose between taste verses feel, verses whitening, verses plaque-killer, verses tarter control, verses sensitive, verses anti-bacterial, verses fluoride-free, verses, verses, verses, verses!!! Then of course there's Ayurvedic Toothpaste, Tea Tree toothpaste, Fluoride-Free, etc. I read somewhere that there are over 67 varieties of toothpastes. It's enough to make your head spin! Over-choice extends itself to over 130 phone companies, thousands of cable stations, etc.
I don't know about you, but as a profession, I'm a hypnotherapist, a consultant, a trainer, a public speaker, a producer, a guitarist, a composer, a videographer/editor, a graphic artist, an author, an editor, a webmaster . . . Shall I go on? This can definitely become "beyond overwhelming"!!!
So I have to step back at times and answer questions like, "What is the best and highest use of my abilities at this moment in time?" "What would make the biggest difference in the world?" "How can I make an ever bigger impact on society?" What would help create an on-going legacy that would further help humanity and the world in general?" "What do I need to do right now to get me to the next level?
So let's go back to the quote above by Peter Drucker, "Do first things first, and second things not at all."
Now, I'm pretty sure that Peter didn't mean to never do the second things. But the "first things" must be done before you can create a momentum. You must know what your priorities are. It you don't know what your "first things" are, there's no way that you can ever do them "First"!
Theory Into Practice:
What New Years Resolution will Reduce Your Effectiveness at Communication?
At the start of a new year we all make resolutions from losing weight to working harder at that hobby, but is there a resolution that if you do it will cut down on your skill at persuasiveness? Well there is one and we will go into it and why this is so.
Social psychologists Brad Sagarin and Cory Scherer have found that giving up swearing can actually make you less effective! The researchers hypothesized that when people pepper their speech with an occasional obscenity, the audience perceives an increase in the speaker's intensity. Moreover, this increase in the perceived passion, excitement and enthusiasm of the speaker ultimately makes the speech more effective and persuasive.
To test this idea, Scherer and Sagarin had participants watch a video of a five-minute long speech. For half of the participants, the speaker used the relatively tame swear phrase "Damn it!" once during the speech. For the other half of participants, the speech was exactly the same, except the swear phrase was omitted. Once the speech was over, participants were asked about their reactions toward the speaker and topic addressed in the talk. Consistent with predictions, the data revealed not only that the speaker was viewed as more passionate about the topic when profanity was used than when it was not, but also that the former was more persuasive than the latter.
Does this mean that you should use bad language with your clients and use four-letter words? NO OF COURSE NOT!. First, the bad words used in this research were clearly very mild by current standards. Importantly, the research suggests that profanity is most likely to be effectiwhen the audience is already generally in agreement with you, but you want to push them even more toward your point of view. It may backfire if the person or group has differing opinions and beliefs! This is why comics can use this type of wording to increase the jokes with their fan base, but may not use such colorful language with a new group.
Still, the results can give one pause before considering totally removing colorful words from their vocabulary. If you go through with it and eliminate even the tame bad words, you may find yourself less able to get your ideas, suggestions, and techniques across!

By Daniel Ingle, Newton, IA
First elicit the "Positive State" of a client you are working with, using V.A.K. Sensory System. Have them hold it up in their hand as they describe it to you, give it a color in the form of a transparent ball, being brighter and bigger. Then have them hold another ball describing the "Problem State" in their other hand. Get as much detail as you can about their problem state; make this ball solid. Then tell them to pull the positive state as close to their face as possible as though they are looking thru it. Then with the other hand stretch it out in front of them and toss the problem ball out in space and watch it, as it goes farther and farther away just until it is a dot off in the distance. The key to this is to get them to look at that problem thru the positive state. As they are looking at the problem disappear, amplify the positive state making it bigger and brighter surrounding their whole body. Get feedback on what their problem looks like now. Then leave them with the positive state that they can look thru at anytime.
