Something to think about from Dr. Wil Horton
Intro to NLP Today E-Zine
NLP Today E-Zine is a monthly series of articles that will bring you the best information in the world of NLP and Hypnosis. We will bring you articles that have been proven in the real world. Heavy with techniques and information you can use in your daily life, whether it's as a therapist with clients, business or sales, or just for self-development. We will get you the information you want and can't get. We focus on proven applications, not theory. Our trainers all "do the work." This is the difference that makes the difference. We cut the fluff and bring the main course. Mental Food you can use. NFNLP is the leader in this type of technology.
This is a service of the National Federation of NeuroLinguistic Psychology and Dr. Wil Horton. We want people to achieve their highest potential, and NLP is the #1 tool for this. You can achieve your dreams.
Captain’s Log:
As I write this month’s log, I am excited about several things. My new book, “Mind Control, How to Get Others to Do What You Want” will be out soon and the upcoming trainings look to be fun. As you know, I just returned from a month in Asia, then immediately followed that with 2 weeks at the NGH conference, so it is good to be home. The NGH, as always, is a great place to revisit old friends and make new ones. We had two great NLP Basic and Master classes and now the world has several more excellent Certified NLP Practitioners and Master Practitioners.
I also wanted to share a website article with you that Beryl Comar, our “Gold” Master Trainer from Dubai shared with me. It was in Time Magazine earlier this year, titled “Mind over Medicine”. Be sure to visit the site.

I have just added a new seminar for the end of October 2006, a special training with Tom Nicoli, where we will both be teaching cutting edge techniques for weight control and other client issues. The course will be offered October 28 and 29 in Ft Myers, Florida. We also have a surprise for all who attend. See marketing for details or contact Tom Nicoli at http://www.tomnicoli.com
Speaking of October, the NGH Train the Trainer Training looks to be a great class. That is right! You can become a full NGH Certified Instructor with this training. If you are a Master or Trainer of NLP, this course is a must for you. Join us October 14 to 22! Contact the NGH at 603-429-9438 for details!
I would like to close with my authors note from my new book:
Authors Note
As I read the edited manuscript for this book, I am reminded that I am one of the luckiest men in the world. A little over 20 years ago I was exposed to the technology in this book and it not only saved my life, it gave me a life worth living. I was caught in a cycle of addiction and self destruction that I, with my limited thought processes could not escape. I have done nothing special to have the opportunity to live the life I currently have. I have a beautiful home, a beautiful wife, a successful daughter, and I have had more success financially in one month than I thought possible.I just returned from a trip to Asia teaching the techniques outlined in this book. The idea that a man who, at one point, was living in a run-down trailer with numerous self-destructive behaviors, including drinking, could become a licensed psychologist, author, and world-traveled speaker on Hypnosis, NLP and Mind Control, in a relatively short period of time, boggles my mind and fills me with a gratitude I can never repay. The magic does not stop there. These techniques have allowed me to overcome a severe physical injury where I was told I would always have a limp and my athletic days were over…and now I’m a newly promoted 4th degree black belt in karate. This is in addition to the numerous medals and trophies I have won at various tournaments. Today I ran an 8:45 mile; not bad for someone told he could never do this!
None of this would have been possible without the techniques I have outlined in this book. I pray that you read and take in the information and that you use it to live the life you deserve. One of my primary missions is to share this information with as many people as I can. I have taught thousands of students and always learn new things. I know that you, too, will one day be able to share with me new and wonderful applications of the technology you are about to learn.
I hope to see you on the road to a happy destiny!
William Horton, Psy.D. CAC CMI
Techniques and Tips:
What I would like to do today, is explain a way to get people to take action toward a goal. One of the problems with getting someone to take action is getting them to do this long enough to form a new habit. I have worked with thousands of clients and finally found a way to get my weight loss clients motivated to exercise, and I have used this as a template for other behaviors as well.
Problems for getting motivated - what stops action:
Install New Strategy
The first thing you need to do is find people who do the behavior you want to install and discover their strategies for this.
Ask them something they love to do, something that makes them excited. Note this.
Take it down, have them access this excitement and anchor it!
Ask about something that if they did not do daily (bath, brush teeth) they would feel bad…terrible. Have them access this and anchor it!
Do the Dave Elman Induction (or relaxation script).
Do a visual squash or reframe the faulty learning.
Have them think of the thing they love to do, step into it, feel the excitement, notice all the good feelings…fade down what you see and hear, keep the feelings of excitement, bring up the image of you working out, working out intensely, (repeat several times) Anchor again.
Now think about how they would feel if they did not, bath, brush teeth, they would feel terrible, now keep that feeling and get an imagine of you not exercising, saying your going to skip it…Anchoring again.
Remember, you are a spiritual being having a physical experience. You want to use your body, move it, be in-touch with it (fire anchor for exercising). Your body is a gift from the universe, a gift from God; what you do with it is your gift back. You want to honor it, and be in tune with it. Your body is the only instrument you have to play your life (fire anchor again).
You know what you can and can’t do, but you want to move and exercise…
The more you try to resist, the worse you feel (fire anchor for negative feeling).
In fact the idea of not exercising make you feel bad, like you have not bathed. Exercise is as natural and needed as bathing or brushing your teeth.
Repeat
This simple process starts the cycle toward the new behavior and adds the penalty for not doing it. Also, by linking it to a higher ideal (God, spiritual values, etc.), it helps. I have also used the idea of someone you love, and not doing the behavior is like saying you do not love them…..

Sports & Performance Case Study:
Supporting Self-Efficacy Using NLP-Hypnosis
By Rodney L. Merrill, MPH, CMHt. CMNLP, CPTLT
Discussion and Case History
In using NLP to model distance runners, I have noticed a few patterns. Although certain runners clearly got a better spin on the chromosomal roulette wheel than others, it isn’t always the physically gifted runners who finish, let alone win, a marathon. Some unlikely characters cross the finish line: pear-shaped penguins waddling their way down the course, scrawny storks with gangly arms and legs flailing in all directions, little Harry Potters, puffing on their anti-asthmatic inhalers. It is an awe-inspiring thing to witness. And, too, you will see a few, admittedly not many, superbly styled running machines who just can’t make it happen.
Even among essentially matched athletes competing at the highest levels, where hundredths of a second can win or lose the competition, you can sometimes see it happen, the tiniest slip in an otherwise “flawless” performance. In the follow-up interview, the athlete quite often attributes the slip — not to a trick knee or a weak ankle — but a loss of focus or a slip in confidence. It comes down to beliefs. In particular, it often comes down to beliefs about self-efficacy.
This being the case, I decided to do an experiment on myself. Although I might be considered “well-rounded” in many ways, I have never been athletic, preferring the library and the keyboard to anything that isn’t sex but involves breathing hard and breaking a sweat. Self-NLP
By: Kevin Linehan
When training in NLP I noticed that I always looked at each technique with an eye towards how I was going to use it in my practice. As I understood the specific purpose of each new idea and how it worked to achieve a specific outcome I noticed that I mentally reviewed past client interactions in order to imagine how this particular technique would have made our work more effective. While working to become a certified trainer I seemed to always look to fellow practitioners, hypnotists, traditional therapists and those practicing other modalities as potential students upon receiving my NLP trainer credentials. While this is a great pool of potential students for workshops and classes it is certainly limited when compared to the number of people that would be interested in learning these techniques to help themselves.
In the book "Teach Yourself NLP "by Bavistar and Vickers the authors explored the concept of four pillars of NLP. The first pillar is the outcome. What goal do you want to achieve? What change do you want to make? The second is developing the sensory acuity in which to analyze the results of the actions taken to determine if those actions brought you closer to the outcome in a timely way. The third is developing the behavioral flexibility in which to expand your potential responses to the feedback so that if it is determined that the outcome is not going to be reached with the current actions in a timely enough manner other actions with more potential can be taken. The fourth pillar is rapport. While it is necessary for someone to have rapport with themselves, the manner in which they self-talk for example, this pillar is especially critical for anyone that is working with others in order to help them reach their desired outcome. Bavistar and Vickers make the case that anyone can use NLP techniques to create the life they desire without the use of a therapist or facilitator.

The Age for NLP
By Deana Ryan (NFNLP Trainer)
While the age of NLP extends beyond three decades, one important question to consider is at what age is it appropriate to teach NLP to children? Obviously, it is appropriate to teach a specific NLP concept to anyone who can benefit from it, but at what age is it appropriate for a child to attend a full NLP Practitioner Training. The answer to this question depends on a number of factors, which will be discussed below.
The first question that should be asked to determine if an NLP training is appropriate for a child relates to the content presented by a given trainer. This is similar to considering whether or not an “R” rated movie is appropriate for a child. Some NLP trainings may use language and content that is appropriate for adults rather than children. In such a situation, the age appropriateness of the material would have to be considered before allowing a child to attend.
Barring any content problems, the second question that should be asked is whether or not the child is capable of grasping the material. To answer this, it may be important to consider the findings of Jean Piaget, best known for his organization of cognitive development into four distinct stages. Piaget four stages include birth to age 2, Sensorimotor Stage, ages 2 to 7, Preoperational Stage, ages 7 to 11, Concrete Operational Stage, and ages 11 and up, Formal Operational Stage. According to Piaget's theory, children develop the ability to think logically about concrete events in the Concrete Operational Stage and develop their abstract reasoning skills after age 11 in the Formal Operational Stage.
