Captains Chair:

It has been a very hectic few weeks with the National Guild of Hypnotists convention, then 3 hurricanes with another on the way, but it has taught me several lessons.

The first hurricane, Charley, totally wiped out my clinical office in Port Charlotte. I had just started a new hypnotist who had completed his training the week before, so his first week on the job was his last for two months as they have had to gut the building and redo the interior.

I was finishing the NLP trainings in New Hampshire as this was happening, so the feelings of being helpless as Christina had to ride the storm out in Florida alone were tremendous. It was hard to complete the trainings as I was preoccupied. I had to use several NLP state management techniques to stay focused and in the moment. I learned how hard it is to keep focused on task as you realize how powerless one is in the face of nature’s unbridled force.

The second hurricane, Frances, just missed us, but the not knowing was as bad as waiting for the event itself. As we watched the storm come ashore on TV there was a feeling of relief, and sorrow for those directly in the path. I cancelled a trip to a karate camp due to the storm.

Ivan will just miss our area, and as I write this we are watching a fourth storm brewing and again the waiting starts.

On the bright side it got me to open up the second office in Ft. Meyers, Florida. And with the clinical office, Suncoast Hypnosis, it will also house the new NLP LEARNING CENTER!

It will host the first trainings next month! We hope to offer a full variety of courses in the near future! You will be able to train and see a fully functioning clinic!

You can still sign up for the trainings in the new office and receive the discount. Check the marketing section and call today!

We are also offering new classes for you to improve your skills. The first is a Hypnobirthing course. This is the original course that has been in Time, Newsweek, and others. This course will add to your skills in great ways. We are offering the 2 day course for hypnotists for the low price of $380, January 15 and 16, 2005. This course is great!

The second is a Past Life Regression course by Georgina Cannon, whose new book “Return” on past life regression is selling well. This course will be January 28, 29, and 30, 2005 for only $695.

On the business side, Richard Harte has decided to offer another Certified Consultants course. I have only heard good things about this program, so check out our marketing at the end for details.

From the Road:

As we prepare to open the new offices, I am asking for feedback from you about what taking an NLP course has done for you. What benefits did you receive from taking the course? How did you use this technology to improve your life? What changes happened as a result of using these skills? What do you think others would get from this life changing technology?

I would like to put up some real life stories on the web site, so people can read about the real benefits of NLP, and how it can improve your life! I am constantly asked, “Why should I take NLP, what will it do for me?” and I would like others to express the positive benefits. Email me your feedback so we can continue to change the world, one NLPer at a time.

Theory into Practice:

The Law of the Seed

Take a look at an apple tree. There might be five hundred apples on the tree, each with ten seeds. That's a lot of seeds! We might ask, "Why would you need so many seeds to grow just a few more trees?"

Nature has something to teach us here. It's telling us: "Most seeds never grow. So if you really want to make something happen, you had better try more than once."

This might mean:

You'll attend twenty interviews to get one job.

You'll interview forty people to find one good employee.

You'll talk to fifty people to sell one house, car, vacuum cleaner, insurance policy, idea...

And you might meet a hundred acquaintances to find one special friend.

When we understand the "Law of the Seed", we don't get so disappointed. We stop feeling like victims. Laws of nature are not things to take personally. We just need to understand them - and work with them.

IN A NUTSHELL

Successful people fail more often. They plant more seeds.

When Things Are Beyond Your Control, here's a recipe for permanent misery...

a) Decide how you think the world SHOULD be.

b) Make rules for how everyone SHOULD behave.

Then, when the world doesn't obey your rules, get angry! That's what miserable people do!

Let's say you expect that:

Friends SHOULD return favors.

People SHOULD appreciate you.

Planes SHOULD arrive on time.

Everyone SHOULD be honest.

Your husband/wife SHOULD remember your birthday.

These expectations may sound reasonable. But often, these things won't happen! So you end up frustrated and disappointed.

There's a better strategy. Have less demands. Instead, have preferences!

For things that are beyond your control, tell yourself:

"I WOULD PREFER "A", BUT IF "B" HAPPENS, IT'S OK TOO!"

This is really a game that you play in your head. It is a shift in attitude, and it gives you more peace of mind ... You prefer that people are polite ... but when they are rude, it doesn't ruin your day. You prefer sunshine ... but rain is ok!

To become happier, we either need to

a) change the world, or

b) change our thinking.

It is easier to change our thinking!

It's not what happens to you that determine’s your happiness. It's how you think about what happens to you.

Techniques and Tips:

A new technique from Gaston (Gus) Gauthier of Canada! (New Master Practitioner)

“DISASSOCIATION AND A RUBBER BAND”

A man came in my office wanting help on controlling his temper. He was evicted from his home and charged for assaulting his wife. He had a court order that he could not associate or be within 100 meters of his wife. After establishing rapport and completing the Advance Information Gathering questionnaire, I felt obligated to provide this client with a tool that would be beneficial to him until we met again the following week. I noticed he was wearing a rubber band on his wrist. When I ask him why, he responded that at work he is always looking for rubber bands. I began to explore with him all the good things about rubber bands. He was able to come up with at least 15 good things you can do with rubber bands. ALL I WANTED TO DO IS ASSOCIATE A POSITIVE ANCHOR TO HIS RUBBER BAND. My next step was to apply the disassociation strategy to the rubber band.

1) IDENTIFY A SPECIFIC BEHAVIOUR YOU WISH TO CHANGE?

My client wanted to be able to manage his anger. I informed him to close his eyes and see in front of him in a big bright associated image of himself when he is angry. I asked him to use all his senses and be specific. I asked him to set this picture aside and open his eyes.

2) I asked him to close his eyes again and form an image of having his outcome.

“Being in control of his emotion or anger”

How did he see himself with this desired outcome?

How did he look, feel, see, hear, smell, colors, brightness etc….

Break state.

3) I had my client visualize the cue image big and bright and the self-image starts out small and dark in the upper or lower corner wherever he preferred. I asked him to say the word, stop and snap his rubber band and have the cue image swiftly shrunk and darkens at the same time that the self image got bigger, larger and brighter. I had him blank the screen and repeat the linking by saying stop and snapping his rubber band. I had him repeat this event at a very fast pace approximately 12 times. (The age of his son).

A week later, my client reported to me that if it weren’t for the rubber band he would be in jail today. Even though he was not supposed to be near his wife, one night he went to her house very angry. She did not want to let him in .As he began knocking hard on the door, he decided to apply the swish and snap his rubber band. He noticed his behavior changed rapidly and he began to cry. He realized what he had done was wrong and went home. His wife did not call the police.

The swish pattern directionalizes the brain. When you direct your mind, your behavior has a very strong tendency to go in the same direction. The swish helps you recode your mind to respond differently to the same trigger.

* Note. In actuality this is not technically a Swish. We were very grateful to Steve Andreas, NLP author, trainer and developer, who read the account of this client and explained, "...In a swish, the cue image is always associated, while Gaston used a dissociated image of him being angry. What Gaston did was associa te the desired self image to the rubber band, (not the cue image). His client had the presence of (conscious) mind to snap the rubber band, which elicited the desired self-image.

In a swish, the cue image unconciously elicits the positive self-image, with no need for the conscious mind to take part."

Once, again, thank you, Steve.
