With the recent hurricane, it brought home what happened last year when Hurricane Charly hit here in my area. The pain was everywhere. Our prayers are with those in the affected areas. We have several members in those areas, so please, add your prayers and energy to ours on their behalf. When these types of events happen most of the people “on the outside” watch in wonder the reactions and responses. Of course, looking at a situation from a safe distance (or one you have no experience with), it is easy to say what one would do. We can look at the different ways people react, by looking at different situations. Within a 24 hour period after the hurricane hit New Orleans and the aftermath started, there were a series of car bombs in Baghdad.

There are three types of actions after an event: a reaction, a response, and a trained response/reaction.

A reaction is a rapid knee jerk action that is immediate with little or no thought. Many times (as with Katrina) reactions (looting, violence, etc.) add to the problem, and may take more effort to fix than the original problem. Ever see someone throw something they couldn’t get to work, and end up breaking it and something else?

A response is to stop and think. It demands an intellectual breakdown of trying to get people what they need in a situation, not what they want. A quick way to look at it is when you hit someone who upsets you. A response is to look at the underlying fear that caused the anger/upset. What we saw in Katrina was reactions in New Orleans, and the government locked into response mode. The people wanted safety and security, the government was deciding the best way to do this, and seemed to be stuck in thought/decide mode, which happens when people are not empowered to make decisions.

When one looks at New Orleans we must remember, despite the warnings, no one had been through this level of hurricane in 50 years; in Florida it was 10 years earlier. We had a level 5 hit (plus we get hit somewhere often); the experience was fresh which builds a response set. It builds flexibility.

This is what we saw in Baghdad, the flexibility of the people responding, due to the fact they have experienced this before. The military builds in this type of trained response/reaction through training. What we will see in New Orleans is the business community going to the next level first - resilience, the ability to bounce back. I say the business community first, as they usually have the highest natural emotional intelligence which leads to the ability to handle situations and the higher levels of emotions around this traumatic event. This allows one to feel the emotion, but not surrender to them, to not be disabled by the emotions. They do not surrender to depression or anger, nor project them onto others. They also will be busy trying to get their businesses up and running.

Those with higher EQ (Emotional Intelligence) see the variety of ways people handle loss, from the loss of feeling invulnerable to the feeling of helplessness in the face of nature. It also accepts the dark side of human nature, that only law and order can keep in check, the predators that are let loose on the weak in times of stress, much like a virus in the human body. It also accepts the fact that life is unfair and we can not fix all the problems of the world or fix most problems perfectly, but we can make a difference. It also knows people will not always make the best choices, but also accepts the truth, that it is best to let them accept the consequences for those choices.

Those with lower EQ project their own feelings of fear and insecurity onto others. They also project their anger onto people who are not reacting the way they think they should. On leaders who did not fix everything before it happened, on victims for being victims, or on life itself for not being fair. Experience builds some EQ as does being open to knowing that you do not know it all and that it is OK. Studying emotions in quiet times also helps build this flexibility. (Our thanks to Beryl Comar for info on EQ.)

NLP Thoughts to Share:

Harold Cohen referred me to this wonderful article and I thought I would share it with all of you. Enjoy! Wil.

It involves a study that had 300,000 people who had cancer, who were treated using NLP techniques and Chi Quong an oriental form of Reiki. The results are outstanding, since they had an effectiveness rate of 95%.

http://www.transformations.net.nz/trancescript/healingcancer.html

This gives overwhelming credence to the mind-body connection in the healing process. It definitely substantiates of how effective NLP techniques can be when they are used with a focus on health conditions.

There are other articles that give support to the use of NLP in the treatment of health conditions. However, the above study stood-out from all of the rest. I am sure that your students and readers would appreciate reading this information. Harold Cohen

From The Road:

This comes in from one of our readers about the recent article on Auditory Swish:

Dear Wil,

My name is Zelig Pliskin and I've been into NLP since 1982 when I read Frogs into Princes.

I am an expert on creating and accessing states. This is something that I do daily (as does everyone else on our planet even though they don't necessarily have the concept of state as their conscious way of looking at their lives and the world.

I also haven't used the regular visual Swish pattern. But when you know how to access great states at will, you don't need to use a Swish pattern.

As I've written in the March 2001 issue of Anchor Point in an article "On Collecting States" by giving unique names to your states that are stored in your brain, you can easily and instantaneously access the state you want at will.

After practicing access the state you wish, you just need to know the state you want to be in this very moment and then access it. A name for the state is the anchor.

For example, when a performer wants to go into a great state, all he would need to do is go into his "Super Performer Absolutely Great State" state. If someone doesn't yet have this state in his mental state collecting, he just needs to create one. See what he would see (even if hardly anything), hear what he would hear, and feel what he would feel. This can be done with creating an "as if" feeling. This can be done by putting on the head of a Super Master of the skill he wants and feeling the absolute confidence that this person would feel.

I consider the hobby of collecting great states as one of the most valuable hobbies one can have.

I wish you all the best,

Zelig

Theory into Practice:

I would like to talk about two things in this column. The first started as a question from a student. She asked about the Hypnotic Seal, and how to handle this. I thought about it and in my 18 years of doing hypnosis/NLP, doing over 20,000 clients one-on-one and 75,000 in groups, I have never experienced a client with this. I did more research and understand how one could be inoculated by someone to resist going into trance. If someone you respect warns you not to go into a hypnotic state, it would be harder to get that person into trance. I believe that since going into trance is a consensual state of mind, and a naturally occurring state of mind, how could one be “sealed” against entering hypnosis?

Now I am not saying that you could not set up a mindset where someone would be reluctant to go into a deep trance. Let me tell a story (Like those of you who trained with me have never heard that!) Yesterday I had a psychiatrist come into my office and her primary concern was the training and experience of the hypnotist. She had used hypnosis to pass her boards and now wanted it to control weight. The only “seal” I have experienced is from other health care professionals and I think it is more of a waking hypnotic belief pattern that has been installed. I guess it boils down to the concept of can the person be reasoned with enough that they will allow the hypnotic state to occur. If the pre-talk is good and in-depth enough, it should happen.

I would like to ask for feedback from members about their experience with the “seal”.

The second thing I want to explore is something I talk about when I teach an NLP class. As most of you know I use the line from the movie “The Empire Strikes Back” “You have just begun to discover your power; you do not know your importance to the universe.” This line, to me states that we, as NLPers, are on a mission and need each other. I received the following story that explains it better:

Dear Friends: Who is packing your parachute?

Charles Plum was a jet fighter pilot in Vietnam.

After 75 combat missions, his plane was destroyed. Plumb ejected and parachuted and spent six years in a P.O.W. camp.

One day, when Plum and his wife were sitting in a restaurant, a man at another table came up and said, "You're Plum! You flew jet fighters from the carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!"

"How in the world did you know that?" asked Plum.

"I packed your parachute," the man replied. Plum gasped in surprise and gratitude.

The man pumped his hand and said, "I guess it worked!" Plum assured him, "It sure did -- if your chute hadn't worked, I wouldn't be here today."

Plum couldn't sleep that night, thinking about that man. Plum says, "I kept wondering what he might have looked like in a Navy uniform and how many times he might have passed him on the Kitty Hawk not even said 'Good Morning'.

You see, I was a fighter pilot and he was just a sailor."

Plum thought of the many hours the sailor had spent on a long wooden table carefully folding the silks of each chute, holding in his hands each time the fate of someone he didn't know.

Plum, a lecturer now asks his audience, "Whose packing your parachute?"

Everyone has someone who provides what they need to help them make it through the day. Let them know that they are important and that you trust them.

I hope I express my gratitude to all of you for packing my chute. I learn more from my students than they will ever know; thank for being part of my Destiny. I hope to see you at training in the future.

“Destiny is not a matter of chance; but a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for. It is a thing to be achieved"

William Jennings Bryant 1860-1925

Techniques and Tips:

"Present to Pleasant" From Pierre Benoit

This technique is used to teach people how to deal with verbal abuse. I have developed it when I did training sessions for the people who give out parking tickets for the city of Montreal. I call it "Present to Pleasant".

Step 1:

Identify the word or phrase (insult or verbal abuse) which really gets you angry, worked up or out-of-control (meaning reacting to the comment).

Step 2:

Identify its "present" definition. What definition do you give it.

Step 3:

Identify its "pleasant" definition. What would you want it to be. The person needs to be creative and give it whatever definition he or she wants. However, the definition needs to be pleasant and not hilarious. Because if it gets the person laughing, even smiling, it may set fire to the situation.

Step 4:

From now on, when you hear that word or phrase, associate the new definition.

I got very good feedback from the Parking Agents. They even call me up and leave their Pleasant definitions on my answering machine.

Marketing:

Here is something to think about: What gets you excited? I ask because I have recently relit my fire. After seeing 20,000 clients and teaching thousands more all over the world I know I have been blessed, but to be honest, it is easy to get complacent. I have been thinking about this for awhile, and what I had to do was back track over times where the excitement burned.

I have been teaching an intensive hypnosis course which makes me think and question how I am doing things. It also makes me look at how “specifically” I work with clients. This causes me to look at ways to improve the processes I use.

I also have started to explore new areas of NLP that I can use; this gets me to explore the old and look for ways to update and improve the techniques, and then test them in the real world. I taught a new technique at the NGH conference to a standing room only crowd. The feedback was humbling. It also made me realize the world (our NLP world) is hungry for new/improved techniques that work. It is in this vein I am starting to teach some new techniques in daylong and weekend formats so you can get these breakthrough ideas into your life and practice now.

The first new course I will offer is “The Aligned Self” In this course you will learn why most people never achieve their goals. Why some people cannot seem to achieve their goals when they seem to do everything that should lead to the accomplishment?

We all have many levels that we may need to “tweak” to get our goals and dreams. Some are:

Our past may help us or hold us back.

Our present with all our current beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. This also includes our environment and capabilities.

Our identity, who we are and who we will allow ourselves to be.

Our current future path, is it leading to this goal?

One needs to be aligned in all areas to be successful. This course will give you the tools needed to achieve your desires and dreams!

I ask that you bring your goals and desires so we can work in real time. I have done this technique one-on-one for quite some time. I will now share it with you for your own and your clients use!

The Aligned Self will be taught for the first time December 10 and 11 in Fort Myers, Florida. Give yourself the gift of your dreams! Only $359 NFNLP Member * * * $450.00 Non-Members. Call now to register: (941) 408-8551
