Captains Chair:
It has been a busy few weeks. September ended with a NLP Basic Practitioner training in Virginia Beach at the NATH conference and the month of October started with a trip to Canada to do a Basic and Master course. It went well and we trained 24 new people into the world of NLP. The Port Charlotte office was finally re-opened (on a limited basis) after the hurricane. The bank building that houses us gave us a temporary office on a lower floor until the rest of the building can be repaired. Another exciting change was the opening of the new Ft. Myers office. We also had the first training in the NLP Learning Center, which is based in the Ft. Myers office.
We will be offering many more classes at the NLP Learning Center such as hypno-birthing and Past Life Regression . Check the marketing section for details. The first class offered in December is a Master Practitioner course focusing on Waking Hypnosis. The class will run Saturday thru Monday, but we will also offer a 1 day refresher on the Basics of NLP on the Friday before. Our Waking Hypnosis course is getting rave reviews!
Also, we have set the China trip up, we will be doing a Trainers course and a Waking Hypnosis course in Hong Kong. To join us contact Dr. Elisa Lai. Her contact information is listed below in our training schedule.
I read an interesting article in Discover magazine, it was about the Mind’s Mirror Doubles the Pain!
In the past, people with injuries to one limb who reported pain in the exact spot on the opposite side were worried that they were experiencing mental problems. Doctors often attributed this to the overuse of the healthy limb causing the almost phantom pain.
Recently, neurologist Anne Louise Oaklander of Massachusetts General Hospital has found the cause to be far wider. She found that nerve damage on one side of the body actually creates a matching injury on the other side of the body! After she noticed mirror image pain in her patients with singles, Oaklander cut nerve bindles in the hind paw of rats and found that within a day about half the nerves in the equivalent part of the other paw died. These mirror nerve injuries are so precise that she concluded they have to result from a specific neuronal signal. "This is the most likely a mechanism that operates in health, perhaps it allows us to coordinate information coming from both side of the body," she states. At the university of Colorado, Linda Watkins, a pain expert thinks the mechanism might be carried out by glial cells, these are the poorly understood sister cells of neurons. She thinks these cells in the spine may activate when pain related are firing, dosing both limbs with inflammatory substances that may trigger an excitory response but may also be toxic to nerves. She found that when glial cells were inactivated the mirror pain in rats vanished.
This leads us back into our idea of how the mind brain functions, and we are just opening the doorway now.

A View From The Outside - A Brit Watches The US Election 2004.
By Adam Vile - Surrey, United Kingdom
Well there it is, or rather there he is. Its over, and ‘W’ is back again for another term of hope, pride, integrity, unity and security, with the largest number of votes of any president. Was it mentioned that this was 51% of those that were cast? Kerry then may well be in the running for having the second most number of votes received by any candidate. But then what do they say, if you don’t hit the note then you are not in tune? Bush was in tune, Kerry a little sharp, or was it flat? Hold on, wasn’t it Clinton with the sax (I said SAX) and Kerry with the Gun, I forget. Oh well, C’est la Vie (that one is for Kerry, he speaks fluent French I am told). But it makes me wonder if John ever had a chance, especially with what has been going on over the last 4 years. It seems to me that George has been campaigning since the day he started in office, and Kerry has only had a year and a half. But then all’s not fair in love and politics. Which brings me to the point of this article.
This has been the most followed electoral campaign of all, and I can tell you over here in the UK George and John have been on our screens constantly, I can only imagine what the last 18 months have been like over in the States. What has been fascinating for us is the ferocity with which the campaign has been fought, and in particular the extremely negative emphasis. We have seen the adverts with farmyard animals, wolves, bears, and we have watched with amusement the creative editing which makes George look like an imbecile and John look as if he couldn’t even decide on what to have for dinner. Since I know a bit of NLP and Hypnosis I thought it would be fun to watch the speeches and the adverts and see what I could pick up. I expected it to be subtle, but quite frankly it was anything but. Here are a few examples for you. Did you notice any of these?
* George W always stood with someone in uniform and the American flag behind him at rallies. The camera that had that shot (obviously fixed) was the one that was on him when he was saying the words Pride, Honesty etc.
* Before George came on the national anthem was played, the pledge of allegiance was recited, and a prayer was said for the President. Great state generation, great anchors.
* He was very often seen not wearing a tie (being one of the guys?)
* He waved at individuals in the crowd as if he knew them.
* Clinton came out for John Kerry in the final weeks. Many good things are anchored to him, and I watched him give his anchors to Kerry (he didn’t even have to steal them).
* George’s campaign symbol the big W.
The advertisements were even less subtle, as well as being overtly negative, they used simple patterns such as: show a dangerous animal, add scary music, make the image vivid and clear, then show a picture of the candidate you want the voters not to vote for. This I call the giving-voters-a-phobia-of-the-other-candidate pattern. If only the creators of the advert could be sure of association, anyone who watched the ad would have a panic attack every time they saw, or made an internal image of whichever candidate. Now, there are some people who already do that when they see a picture of George Bush !! My favourite is the advert which has people not making their mind up, specifically the groom who decides to kiss the bridesmaid and not the bride, then of course it cuts to John Kerry and the connection is made. We may laugh, and we know that the American people can see right through these ads, but we do know that the information goes in. We just can’t stop it.
These unsophisticated techniques are similar to the ones we may use in therapy, communication, coaching, and we all know how effective they are (Bandler for example loves to give people phobias of not very useful things like laziness and untidiness). As an outsider I am amazed at how overtly these techniques are utilised to generate negative states and associate them with specific people. Of course there are a lot of positive anchors used as well, especially the flag and the pledge of allegiance, and lets not forget Bruce Springsteen and Britny.
One thing that surprised me was, that in our field it is generally understood that the negative is ignored and that only the positive parts of a statement remain. So that if I said "Don’t vote for George W" your subconscious would automatically hear and install "Vote for George W". However, I heard someone from a group that had been making these ads (of course the candidates themselves would never associate or endorse such slur) say that she felt that if you re-enforced the negative enough, in many different ways, when the individual went to the polls they would remember not to vote for a specific candidate, but would not remember why. But then even if we accept this logic, as both sub-campaigns are essentially doing the same thing, then the poor voter would go to the polls and the only thing that she would remember is not to vote for either candidate!!
Then again, if you accept the NLP logic that only the positive sentiment is retained in a negative sentence, they voter want to vote for both candidates. The result of either of these would be total confusion and random voting.
So if the negative sub-campaign was ineffective, how did George win and Kerry not? My view, from outside is that George had 4 years to work on building up very powerful anchors and connect himself with the core values of the population -security, patriotism, pride, integrity. Essentially he built rapport with a nation (lets not forget that he broke rapport with a number of other nations!!), and then when the campaign trail started he fired the anchors, generated appropriate states, and sustained them all the way to the voting station. This is a bit like the way in which I might work with a client on confidence and motivation issues, except that George (and his team) did it to a whole country.
Of course, they would never allow this manipulation of the populous in Britain, the land of Tiffin, cucumber sandwiches and stiff upper lips. Would they? Its just not cricket. I suppose we will find out in march when Tony (Blair) starts his bid for a new term. Perhaps he has asked George for some advice. He could do with some. Then again maybe he could take my NLP practitioner class!!

Not "Just a Mom"
A great reframe!
A woman named Emily renewing her driver's license at the County Clerk's office was asked by the woman recorder to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself.
"What I mean is," explained the recorder, "do you have a job, or are you just a...
"Of course I have a job," snapped Emily. "I'm a mother."
"We don't list 'mother' as an occupation... 'housewife' covers it," said the recorder emphatically.
I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation, this time at our own Town Hall. The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised, efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like, "Official Interrogator" or "Town Registrar." "What is your occupation?" she probed.
What made me say it, I do not know... The words simply popped out. "I'm a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations."
The clerk paused, ballpoint pen frozen in midair, and looked up as though she had not heard right.
I repeated the title slowly, emphasizing the most significant words. Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.
"Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest, "just what you do in your field?"
Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heard myself reply, "I have a continuing program of research, (what mother doesn't), in the laboratory and in the field, (normally I would have said indoors and out). I'm working for my Masters, (the whole darned family), and already have four credits, (all daughters). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities, (any mother care to disagree?) and I often work 14 hours a day, (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers and the rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money."
There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk's voice as she completed the form, stood up, and personally ushered me to the door.
As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants - ages 13, 7, and 3. Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model, (a 6 month old baby), in the child-development program, testing out a new vocal pattern.
I felt triumphant! I had scored a beat on bureaucracy! And I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than "just another mother."
Motherhood...What a glorious career! Especially when there's a title on the door.
Does this make grandmothers "Senior Research Associates in the field of Child Development and Human Relations" and great grandmothers "Executive Senior Research Associates"? I think so!!!
I also think it makes aunts "Associate Research Assistants."

Bill O’Hanlon was the editor of the first NLP Newsletter (1978-1980) and studied with Milton Erickson in 1977 (he was Erickson’s gardener during that time, bartering for Erickson’s teaching). Bill has gone on to write 21 books and teach thousands of workshops around the world. Expanding his original mission of changing how therapy was practiced worldwide (he created Solution-Oriented Therapy), he is now passionate about helping people make the contributions they are meant to make. He does intensive seminars about how to write and publish books and how to teach compellingly and get on the workshop circuit. Bill and I bartered some online book writing and publishing coaching for me announcing several of his upcoming programs in this newsletter, so here is the first of those programs:
* * *
In this intensive seminar Bill O’Hanlon will teach you what he’s learned over the course of writing 21 books in the past 18 years. He has written both professional and trade (popular) books, worked with a number of publishers and several agents, been on Oprah, The Today Show and other national shows. He says he was not a natural author and developed strategies for getting a book completed and published.
He has refined this process, informally coaching friends and colleagues over the years (one friend he coached got a $30,000 advance) and because he gets so many requests for assistance, finally decided to offer it as a group seminar. Bill has offered this seminar several times. This time he has decided to expand it to a more intensive week-long format. The intensive will provide coaching and specific action plans for people interested in writing professional or popular (“trade”) books.
You will get detailed and individualized coaching on:
* The pros and cons of professional and trade markets
* To self-publish or not
* Identifying which market is right for your book
* How to focus your concept
* How to create a clear outline
* How to create a proposal to sell the book
* How to find a publisher and/or an agent
* How to get off your butt and write your book(s)
