Something to think about from Dr. Wil Horton

Intro to NLP Today E-Zine

NLP Today E-Zine is a monthly series of articles that will bring you the best information in the world of NLP and Hypnosis. We will bring you articles that have been proven in the real world. Heavy with techniques and information you can use in your daily life, whether it's as a therapist with clients, business or sales, or just for self-development. We will get you the information you want and can't get. We focus on proven applications, not theory. Our trainers all "do the work." This is the difference that makes the difference. We cut the fluff and bring the main course. Mental Food you can use. NFNLP is the leader in this type of technology.

This is a service of the National Federation of NeuroLinguistic Psychology and Dr. Wil Horton. We want people to achieve their highest potential, and NLP is the #1 tool for this. You can achieve your dreams.

Captain’s Log:

This is a special month for me. My new book (see below) is finally out and it was released on a special day for me, my sobriety “birth date”, St. Patrick’s Day, a great day for an Irishman to stop drinking!

Many people ask why I still am active in AA, and really push recovery for alcoholics and addicts, and that I openly admit my former addiction. I do this for two reasons:

  1. So I never forget
  2. So others can know it is possible to stop and develop a great life.

I never would have been able to get to this point in my life had I not been exposed to this new way of thinking. That is what lead me to NLP and Hypnosis!

When this comes up, I am reminded of two things:

  1. When I used to work in Detox and treatment units, I saw many highly educated and successful people who could not sober up, they tried, and many of them died.
  2. Something that used to go around treatment centers... it was from a letter to the AA Central Service Office...this is a paraphrased version:

We Tried and We Died

We died of pneumonia in rooms where they found us three days later when somebody complained of the smell.
We died against bridge abutments and no one knows if it was suicide, and we probably didn’t know either, except it is always suicide.
We died in jail cells, never knowing whether we were guilty or not. We went to priests and clergy, they gave us pledges and told us to pray, then go and sin no more. When we failed we were looked on as morally weak and sinful.
We tried and we died.
We died of overdoses, we died in bed with the DT’s, we died in straight jackets, we died in car wrecks trying to get home.
We died alone and sick, but the worst part was no one know one believed how hard we tried. We went to doctors and they pumped us full of all kinds of things,(many thought we had a “Valium” deficiency). They put us in places to dry us out and many of us were told to learn to handle our booze, or just say no. We tried and we died.
We died in our own vomit, chocked to death on it, as our jaws were wired shut from a fight or accident.
We died in shame.
We died believing that we hadn’t tried, that if only we tried harder, prayed better, or read the right books, we might have made it.
We died falling off high buildings, because of course, iron workers drink.
We died with a gun in our mouths because we could not face another day, another look of anger, or pity from those we loved.
We died shot in the head execution style, because this time we crossed the wrong people.
We died of convulsions, or Brain insult,
we died in disgrace and abandoned. If we were female, it was worse because Ladies do not act that way.
The worst thing was that for every one of us that dies, there are another hundred, or another thousand, who wished that they could die, who go to sleep praying they will not have to wake up because enduring the pain of another day is intolerable, and have stopped hoping that they could change.
We died until a solution was found, and it did not come from Rome, or Mecca, or Jerusalem, or Harvard or Yale, not even from Washington DC, but from Akron, Ohio in a simple interaction of one person helping another in order to help themselves. When finally a person in dire straights found someone who understood the nature of the problem, and could help.
This allows us to find ways to connect with our higher spiritual selves, and this helps us to help others, we are able to seek out new answers and help from those that guide us on our journey. We can learn to live life on life’s terms, and be happy. (This is where we come in.)
WE NO LONGER HAVE TO DIE.

This is why I am passionate about helping others over-coming a death sentence of addictions.

I hope to see you on the road to a happy destiny!

William Horton, Psy.D. CAC CMI

Techniques and Tips:

(alternate version) of Go Straight To Your Goal Technique:
By Nicholas Then Wan Tzeh

  1. Have client write out description of having achieved the desire goal in at least two (2) different context, pay attention to using as much sense of sight, sound, touch, taste and smell as possible.
  2. Re-read to identify internal conflicts, usually in the form of physical discomfort feelings as client reads the description. Change or add or delete certain words to make the whole story/description with minimum conflict and as believable as possible.
  3. Re-read the descriptions to identify key feelings/resources needed to make the desired goal/state real/achievable/believable, especially to overcome the above ‘internal conflicts’.
  4. Elicit the desired/needed resources or states using memory, external stories or if available, audio-visual materials such as short movie clips to generate feelings of success, confidence, skillful, having great powers, etc. Anchor and chain anchors.
  5. Have three (3) chairs - Future chair, Present chair and Past chair.
  6. Client sit on Present chair, do a quick Self-Appreciation technique, then fire chain anchor into the ‘desired/achieved goal’ state, looking at the Past chair and imagine seeing the state of not yet achieved goal.
  7. Client sit on Future chair, and imagine a state SOME TIME AFTER having achieved the goal, looking back at the Present chair as having achieved the goal, and looking back at the Past chair as state of not yet achieved goal.
  8. This is to make the Desired State Achieved, represented by the ‘Present Chair’ more ‘detached’ and believable, and client is to anchor again the ‘chain anchor’ (i.e. intensify the believability of the desired state feeling).
  9. Client then imagine the ‘Past chair’ as now inside a room with holograph functionalities (like in Sci-fi ‘training/simulation’ rooms), the Future chair state is watching the Present chair state whom is ‘visiting and watching’ the Past chair state in hologram room, the hologram room is playing the scene of the ‘not yet achieved goal’ state (client’s actual current state), with all the challenges and obstacles.
  10. In this double disassociated ‘mode’, client is in “some time after having achieved the goal’ state, watching the “having just achieved goal state of himself/herself” whom is ‘visiting and watching’ the hologram of “not yet achieved goal” state – would be able to watch all the obstacles and challenges with detachment and minimum fear. Ask the client to send loving energy to himself/herself in the “not yet achieved goal” state, totally accepting that state for what it is, just like how one can totally accept a hologram.
  11. Client (while sitting in the Past chair) then fires the anchor to step into the “having just achieved goal state”, and then steps into (taking over the physical body) the body of the “not yet achieved goal state”, thus, the client is having the ‘achieved goal’ feeling within the physical body in the hologram of not yet achieved goal state. Ask the client to send loving energy to himself/herself in the “not yet achieved goal” state, totally accepting that state for what it is, just like how one can totally accept a hologram.
  12. Client then makes a mental note that he/she has already achieved his/her goal and totally accept the ‘experience’ of obstacles, challenges, fears as it is, just like totally accepting an experience in a hologram that is gradually evolving into the desired state (key is he/she feels he/she has already achieved the goal, and whatever she experiences as “not yet achieving goal” is disassociated and as part of ‘evolution’ process, totally accepted (totally alright) and is evolving into his/her Present chair state.
  13. So, Past chair is hologram representing client ‘current actual state’ (but metaphorically represented as ‘past’). Present chair is representing ‘achieved goal’ state anchored with chain anchor. Future chair is some time after having achieved goal state.
  14. Break state by putting the Past and Future chairs/seats aside, look around the room and center himself/herself.
  15. Sitting in the Present chair, relax the client/bring her into quick trance with simple breathing exercise and eyes closed.
  16. Fire her anchor of having achieved her goal and imagine herself going about his/her current daily activities related to her goal.
  17. TEST: ask her/him if she/he can see her/his current reality with a new feeling – the feeling of having achieved the goal. If she/he succeeds in seeing and feeling the current reality with the anchored state, notice how she/he responds, and what resources does she/he have now (i.e. confidence, believability of achieving goal, inner calm, better self-esteem/self-belief, etc.)
  18. Follow up: If there are some remaining conflicts (i.e. conflict of being pro-active to go after goal vs. being re-active and procrastinating), use Visual Squash with Regression to overcome them, and re-anchor the ‘clean, conflict-free’ desired state.
