Something to think about from Dr. Wil Horton
Intro to NLP Today E-Zine
NLP Today E-Zine is a monthly series of articles that will bring you the best information in the world of NLP and Hypnosis. We will bring you articles that have been proven in the real world. Heavy with techniques and information you can use in your daily life, whether it's as a therapist with clients, business or sales, or just for self-development. We will get you the information you want and can't get. We focus on proven applications, not theory. Our trainers all "do the work." This is the difference that makes the difference. We cut the fluff and bring the main course. Mental Food you can use. NFNLP is the leader in this type of technology.
This is a service of the National Federation of NeuroLinguistic Psychology and Dr. Wil Horton. We want people to achieve their highest potential, and NLP is the #1 tool for this. If you feel you have been added to this list in error, check out an issue, and then let us know if you would like to be removed.
You can achieve your dreams.
Captains Chair:
I have always thought that NLP and Hypnosis' greatest gift to people (who are exposed to it and are blessed to learn it) is that it really brings you out of trance. We focus on putting into trance, when in fact a lot of the true power in helping people is giving them the ability to break out of the social trance with all the rules, regulations, and self-imposed restrictions that come with them.
How often do we hear, “I can't lose weight” or “I just can't stop smoking” to “Me, I could never speak in front of a group,” to the deeper false beliefs that keep people trapped in a life that do not like. As the character in “Joe vs. the Volcano” says, “most people walk around in a sleep, and the few that wake up walk around in total amazement.” I would add they control the world, because they see through the social trances.
I have been blessed to have Hypnotized/NLPed around 50,000 people in the last few years, and sadly most people do not know their true potential. They have never really been taught to release their thinking and dream big dreams.
We are taught to “challenge” thinking with the Meta Model; what a gift this truly is. We learn to look for the subconscious motives, the subtext, and ask . . .
“According to whom?”
“What would happen if you did?”
“What would happen if you didn't?”
“Who, what, where, or when specifically?” (my favorite)
“What is the secondary gain here?”
Current world events come to mind about how we can use this to screen the information presented to us. Recently we have seen a lot of news about a supplement, ephedra, and what should be done about it. They have linked it to many things that upon review; there was no linkage. Fact are used to sway you:
“Between 80 and 100 people have died from ephedra related complications over the last 10 years.” Interesting. Do they mention that a lot of these happened when peopled mixed them alcohol and other drugs? Do they mention that every year over 110 people die from Tylenol problems, many more than that from Aspirin, and the number from prescribed medications is through the roof?
From this issue to the world events about war, I am not talking about the content, you may or may not agree that is not what I am pointing to, and it is the process used to sway us that is important. This is where we see NLP techniques on a mass scale. (Sometimes used well, most times not.) If we as NLPers and hypnotists do not challenge the information, we can understand how the people who have not been exposed to this technology are swayed into opinions.
What can we do? Just point out the Meta model violations to people. Challenge the information. Check the facts and maybe others will also. That is the leadership we want to show the world.
“With great power comes great responsibility.” You, my friends and colleagues, have a great power, the power of being awake. Use it!
From the road:
I always stress to people to check your equipment before a talk/show. I had this put back to me recently. I was doing a Stage Hypnosis show at a casino and decided to do a one-handed board break, as a closing action, to show the power of the mind and focus. So I stopped and got some wood, pine, and had it cut to size. They threw in my truck for me. I got to the site, checked the sound equipment, the lights, and the set up. I had my music. I grabbed a piece of wood and placed it near the stage.
The show went well and I was ready to do my closing. I grabbed the wood and for some reason (I still don’t know why), I gave the command, “When I hit the board, regardless of it breaking or not, you will.” Then I noticed the wood felt funny, heavier than I expected. I threw it in the air, striking it quickly. WHAM! It flew across the room and did not break. By mistake I had gotten hard, pressure-treated pine, instead of soft, untreated pine. My knuckle swelled and turned blue. The audience thought it was part of the show. I shook several people hands (Damn that hurt!) and had to use state management big time on this. Looking back, it was funny, and now a couple of weeks later I can make a fist. The next show I will definitely double-check the wood.

Theory into practice:
From Sean P Hammond:
I was asked by a friend, where I get my metaphors from?
It made me think, as to where do I get them from?
After thinking for a short while, I realized that they are all based on my own life and experiences. I left school, my first job was training to repair accordions, and you have to open up & go inside, all the different parts that are there. Do any need repair?
I worked for a few years in acting, I found that a lot of people in life-wear masks, in the acting game, you get paid to wear a mask! Being someone you're not.
I found that as a children's entertainer, you see the faces staring up at you, waiting, wondering and you can wonder ...What was going to happen?
(Everybody has his or her model of the world; you should respect it, Perception is projection.) I blew the balloon up the children watched, each twist the bubble became information locked inside, until the last twist and the model was finished.
Everybody wears a mask of some sort to be something they are not or to hide something, the key is to be who you are or act AS IF.
Sorting out what is wrong inside, allows you to come outside, test to see it works.
(Three jobs I have done in my past, I vary them to suit my needs.)
1. Accordion repairist.
2. Actor.
3 . Children's entertainer.
So take a tip from our friend in England, use your past to create stories that you can use.
Technique and Tips:
The Broken Gaze
By Paul J. Leslie, III
Every salesperson at least one point in their career has been asked about their competition by a customer. It never looks good to a customer when you talk bad about your competitors. When you use The Broken Gaze you will be able to say nice things about the competition that your customer will perceive as negatives without you ever saying or expressing it.
1. You must be in excellent rapport with good eye contact with your customer from the beginning.
2. When the customer asks about your competitor, break the eye contact and slightly lower your voice.
3. When you are done talking about them instantly re-establish eye contact and previous voice patterns.
For example:
You and Mrs. Smith are talking about the fine washer and dryers your store sells. You are in good rapport and have anchored `quality and dependability' to yourself. You have excellent eye contact. She then asks about Jones Washers, who are down the street. You immediately break your eye contact and slightly lower your voice and say, "I have heard that there are nice people down at Jones". You immediately reconnect your eye contact and bring back your voice pattern to normal to tell Mrs. Smith about your free delivery offer. If she asks later about Jones Washers you try the same approach. Her brain will link losing rapport to Jones Washers, so it doesn't matter what they offer she will feel disconnected to the competition.
