Captain’s Log:

I will keep it short this month so you can enjoy the summer weather.  June 21 is the official start of summer (here in the USA), and to celebrate, we will offer a "Summer Fling Special".  Buy two home-study courses (NLP Basic Practitioner Course, NLP Master Practitioner Course, or NLP Trainers Training) and get an additional item at 50% off! This special will be until July 5, 2008 (in honor of our 4th of July, Independence Day holiday).

I've had a busy month decompressing from 2 trips, Canada ("Hey") and Malaysia ("La"). I had great time training new people in this wonderful art. I am always honored to start others on this path of discovery. I also was honored to be asked to attend a national convention in September…I will get more on that later.

Also, coming soon, some new case studies and examples of NLP in action!

I read some great research that I thought you may find interesting. The research points out that when trying to convince others that your way of thinking is the right one, you should look for people who have converted to your way of thinking. The study had participants listen to a persuasive message in which the speaker was clearly an outspoken critic of alcohol. Whereas, some participants learned that the speaker had abstained lifelong from alcohol, others learned that the speaker was formally a heavy drinker who quit drinking a couple of years prior, and was sober. The results of the study revealed that participants were far more persuaded by the speaker who was formally a heavy drinker than the lifelong teetotaler. The main reason is that the convert is seen as true hands-on expert. This is why testimonial ads work so well, I know from experience, overweight people look to those who have lost weight as more experienced and helpful. This is also the strong draw of A.A. It also ties into beliefs, as last and this month's article!

Levine, J. M., & Valle, R. S. (1975): The convert as a credible communicator. Social Behavior and Personality, 3, 81-90.

The NGH (National Guild of Hypnotists) Conference is coming up August 8 to 11.  I will be teaching the NLP Basic and Master Certification courses there.  The NLP Basic Practitioner Certification Course will be Pre & Post Conference - August 6-7 & 11-12; the NLP Master Practitioner Certification Course following on August 13-15.  Be sure to take advantage of these courses as the NGH has a special discounted price versus what we normally charge for a live training.  Also, for those of our members who have already taken these courses, you may attend the live trainings at the NGH for a special audit price of $175.00 per course.  This is especially terrific for those who took the courses as a home-study course and now have the opportunity to attend a live training.  Call now to register:  (603) 429-9438 or visit www.ngh.net.

As we all know, goals are more powerful when written down and expressed to others. This year I have set a personal challenge to myself, after seeing a picture of myself at last years conference. I realized I had put on a few "travel pounds". I  will be at my last martial arts competition weight. I last completed in 2004-2005, so I plan on showing up in Marlborough in competition shape. Those of you attending the conference, be sure to stop by and check my progress.  Tying in to the above article, it will lend more power to helping other "50ish" traveling professionals get into shape. It has caused me to design a new product, "Lean and Energetic After 50 - a Guide for Professionals to Regain Their Youthful Shape and Outlook!"

The Incredible Power of Beliefs: Part II

In part one of "The Incredible Power of Beliefs", it was uncovered that there are many behaviors, processes and thinking that go into success. Individuals must believe that they can exceed as well as rating their personal potential at a high level. In the second part, we will expand on these ideas and give even more for individuals to understand the process of thinking for success and achieving it as well.

Reaching the Mind with Visualization

Visualization is a very important aspect in human behavior as touched on in part I. With the power of visualization individuals can see themselves in successful positions, imagining broken limitations and boundaries that are holding them back. To see the power of visualization here is an exercise:

1.)  Pointing your finger forward, turn your body in a clockwise motion as far as you can. Make a mental note of this position.
2.)  Close your eyes and visualizing yourself in the above exercise.  Now, with your eyes closed, continue, but stretch yourself a little further (in your mind). Imagine yourself another three feet from the position that you were in with your "closed eye" experience.
3.)  Now, open your eyes and do the same. Notice how you went further than the first time?
You get past your mental limits and boundaries that you set for yourself. That is because you imagine that you can, and you do! Success is just a visualization away!

Breaking Beliefs

Most people strive to a record and never seek a higher goal for themselves. Now you may think, what does that mean? What it means is that if you only strive for something that has already been accomplished you may never fulfill a higher goal. Take running for example. Prior to the early 1950's no one had ever run a mile in less than four minutes. After Roger Bannister a college student run the mile in less than four minutes it was not longer that others followed his lead. Why is this? Because people fail to reach for what they think is unobtainable. Amazingly after Bannister broke the record, thirty seven other runners broke the same record that year. What does this tell us? Basically never take the "top goal" and quit. Strive for more and reach for the unthinkable.

Beliefs are Never Absolutes

Beliefs are sometimes true, but often times they are only an opinion or personal perception of a situation. Did you ever stop to think that someone that is feeling down, would have a different belief about a situation than he/she would when they were feeling better? People have beliefs about a variety of things everyday, but this does not make it set in stone or a rule to live by. Sometimes perceptions are wrong, off or misguided by faulty information. Think about the game that you played in elementary school when you whispered a secret in the ear of a person standing next to you. By the end of the line the details changed, stories were different, and perceptions were certainly different. See how things can become distorted? That is how it works.

You must come to understand that no matter what the belief, you must realize that it could change. When we have a belief about something it must be evaluated. Evaluated and determined whether or not it is true for everyone or tainted by some other motive that may inhibit ability. Asking yourself if the belief will hold you back or empower is the best way to understand whether the belief is positive or negative. Most successful individuals share the belief that all things happen for a reason and not because of fate. The belief that fate or blessings provide a successful outcome can cause distress and frustration. Success does not fall in the lap of anyone; they have to make it happen!

Beliefs become True

Saying that beliefs are not always true is simply a fact, but the individual having the belief finds that often the belief comes true. Over and over it has been taught that what individuals believe and think is their fate. We are a product of our internal belief system. No matter how faulty a belief the person that has it will inevitably live it. People become what they believe because it is how they perceive the opportunity and environment around them. People do not perceive reality, but the do perceive their perception of reality. Read that sentence again, it is a mind boggling theory, but one that is unbelievably true. A good example of this theory can be seen when two people have a verbal argument. Both parties are angry and will recall different things. The mind will take in parts of the altercation changing, deleting and even distorting the information.

People have the tendency of remembering a negative expression or action much longer than a positive one. For parents it may be that their child has done a host of things correct, but the one time they mess up, they have trouble living it down. If the child does something again the parents will automatically return to the negative experience.

People have self fulfilling prophecies not by accident, but because they set themselves up for the situation. A nagging, suspicious wife can drive a husband away with the constant negativity. The strong and passionate beliefs can often times become true, because we keep on with them until they are a reality. So careful with your beliefs, unless they are positive, because you may just create a self-fulfilling prophecy that you don't want.

Perceptual Blind Spot

Sometimes the brain will delete something because of a belief system. Have you ever been looking for something searching high and low for it? All the time you were telling yourself that you hate looking for things and won't be able to find it because you are so terrible at finding things. Someone else comes along and grabs what ever you were looking for, in a place that you had already looked two or three times. What is going on? Are you having trouble with your sight? No, this phenomenon is known as a perceptual blind spot. Because you are so busy telling yourself that you are terrible at finding things, your eyes scans right across the item with a lack of detection. Beliefs can cause your success to be the same way. If you believe that there are no opportunities and you will never be successful, you will miss opportunity right under your nose.

The Famous and Intelligent Proven Wrong

Large companies and those seeking advertisements look to those that are famous or intelligent to promote their product. This happens because the public has a positive regard for the individual allowing them to believe what they say. But, what if they are wrong? Bill Gates promoted the fact that no computer needed more than 250k of RAM. Dr. Lee D. Forest claimed that man would never reach the moon no matter how many scientific advances came along. So, those that are intelligent and/or famous do not always know best. Never take limitations as whole truths, always strive for one step better. What if no one had ever promoted the need for more memory, or a walk on the moon? Dreams are what make success come true. Dream and dream big!

Creating Beliefs

Beliefs come from experiences and individuals around us. Beliefs are drawn from friends, family members, educators and the local hero. These perceptions and beliefs are important and make us who we are, but one must remember that they are only as good as the perceptions of the individual. Beliefs are never absolute truths and should be treated as such. Evaluating beliefs to ensure that they are not holding you back is very important. Beliefs become embedded into our brains
