Captain’s Log:

The past month has been very exciting with another international trip, this time a NLP training in India, which will be followed shortly with another visit to Malaysia. It is wonderful seeing the magic of NLP spreading throughout the world. I have several Malaysian trainings planned in September and November-December, with a possible side trip to Hong Kong.

We are also in the process of putting together a new certified home study course for NeuroLinguistic Hypnotherapist. Beryl Comar, NFNLP’s “Gold Trainer” in Dubai, has been successfully teaching a live training of this course for some time now. I highly recommend Beryl’s training if you are in the U.A.E. Beryl will also be teaching at the August NGH Conference. She is doing a Post Convention Workshop on Emotional Intelligence. Her seminar will allow you to:

Next, a special offer this month, with a purchase of a NLP Home study course, you will receive both volumes of “Six Blind Elephants” by Steve Andreas. And, as an extra special offer to our NGH conference attendees who would like to add NLP to their toolbox but uncertain how to “fit it in” with all the other great conference activities...why not take our NLP Basic Practitioner home study course with an NGH discount of 40% off with your registration of the Post NGH Conference NLP Master Practitioner course on August 15-17. Call (941) 408-8551 for this discount. It will not be listed on the web site’s shopping cart.

Remember, those of you who have taken either the NLP Basic Practitioner course or NLP Master Practitioner course can audit the course at the NGH conference at the cost of $175.00. This means you can attend the entire course for a phenomenal fee of $175.00.

This past month I had the opportunity to attend a trainers training where I was a student. It was for a corporation, learning to teach their material. It was eye-opener to be a student again and be on the “other” side of the training. I have done trainers courses for 10 years (NLP and Hypnosis) and I will admit, this was a new experience for me. I learned a lot, both in methodology and in sharing the mindset of a student. I believe this experience will be reflected in my own training skills.

New additions to the NFNLP web site:

NLPedia - an NLP knowledge base. This will feature NLP articles by Wil Horton and open to NFNLP members to share their experience.

NFNLP’s Public Service Advisory Bulletin.

This will be a posting in the form of “Let the Buyer Beware.” It will contain names of people who have deliberately and inexcusably cheated NFNLP or NLP students by non-payment or incompletion of contracted services. They may be customers who have ordered products and then defaulted on payment agreements either by bad checks/credit cards or non-payment; or trainers who have not completed their contracted services (example - literally “disappearing” with their payment without completing the final step of certification for their students). We have these incidents documented in our files if any questions arise. As we said, “This is just a ‘Let the Buyer Beware’” advisory so that others in our field may not be “burnt.”

I hope to see you on the road to a happy destiny!

Techniques and Tips:

Goal Setting and Tapping into All the Senses
By Jeff Campana

The new technique that I would like try and implement would be specific to goal setting and tapping into all the senses which is what NLP does. I am looking however to use a creative approach and modernize it a little bit and make use of the fact that we live in an age where information is right at our finger tips. The question in my mind for quite some time has been, “How can I leverage some of the cool technology trends to enhance the inherent effectiveness of NLP techniques?”

There are tons of books on goal setting today along with all of the different types of activities that a person could engage in to accomplish one’s goals. For example, visualization is big…and the thought that if you’ve been there in the mind, you will go there in the body. Many speakers today also talk about the fact that you should begin with the end in mind (Isn’t this what NLP does as well?). Even movies today, in my opinion, preach some similar things. The movie “The Secret”, like it or hate it, does bring up some interesting points that are by no means new at all, but rather things that have been around for a long, long time. The movie, like many of the motivational or self help authors, talks about getting into a state of mind where you not only see yourself being, having, or doing what you want but, more importantly, also recommends that you feel all of the feelings you would feel as if you already have these things at this moment (Again, to me, there is a correlation here with NLP techniques I have seen.) I’ve heard these principles referred to as the Law of Attraction or as Principles of Quantum Physics, or even with some religious connotations to faith, that a Higher Power will help you. Regardless of the specific twist that I’ve seen, heard, or read about, I’ve been picking up on all of the commonalities across the board and believe that there are many parallels to NLP in all of these. I also believe, that in many ways, correlations to hypnosis exist here as well. There may not be a script that is being delivered, but as it relates to multimedia and movies, I think these are most hypnotic forms of entertainment because if you are a person that can suspend your disbelief for two hours, or however long a particular type of movie goes on for, your brain probably goes into an alpha state where you are taking in this information more readily. If you didn’t, you probably wouldn’t experience the physiological feelings of fear, anger, excitement, joy, happiness or whatever else you may experience during a really good movie. Imagine you are kid studying fencing and you are a huge Star Wars fan, so right before your match, you watch a compilation of all the Star Wars fight scenes on a huge LCD screen in a sound proof room with Surround Sound blaring. Now imagine that just outside that room is your opponent. When you come out of there and engage, you might just engage with a little more intensity because of what just went thru your mind. Take it a step further, if you watched YOUR favorite scenes first, and then replayed it with your eyes closed and did the NLP technique where you see, hear, and feel as if you are actually in the movie fighting off Darth Vader or whomever, and come out of the room, you may yet still engage with even more intensity and confidence. The examples of where visual input combines with specific auditory stimuli (music) are everywhere. Imagine being at Disney World with no music in the background or watching a Rocky movie with no soundtrack or going to the gym without your IPOD…would the experience be less intense?...which now brings me to the technique. Think IPOD, Goal Setting, and the principle of a Vision Board where you cut out the pictures of things that represent the goals that you wish to accomplish. I’d like to use NLP in combination with the IPOD, vision board, and the idea of goal setting whether it be for a specific individual goal, or perhaps all of the life arenas that a person has goals in, if they have taken the time to really define these. The core of the NLP technique we would be using could be a combination of the New Behavior Generator with Visual Squash with some minor modifications specific to goal setting. Here is the technique.

Step 1- have the person define the goal or group of goals and create a vision board with pictures or quotations ( auditory) that really resonate and create strong feelings (kinesthetic) associated with a particular goal. Even though this is a vision board, as we progress, we will still combine and be tapping into all the senses so my thought is that this will work with anyone.

Now, for purposes of this exercise, here is an example. Let’s assume that multiple goals are to be represented for this client. The goals are as follows (Optional, but we can even have the client identify what their core values are so that we make sure the goals they spend their time on are in alignment with values that they are passionate about.):

  1. Professional/financial- wishes to be an expert communicator (sales, coaching) who commands an income of 300k per year.
  2. Professional- wishes to be a sought after speaker and wishes to have the finesse of a Bill Clinton combined with the intensity and confidence of a Tony Robbins.
  3. Physical- wants to accomplish to goal of becoming a skilled fighter with a black belt. When they think of what this means, the strongest image that associates the feelings would thoughts of Bruce Lee.
  4. Physical- wants to be in perfect physical condition and play soccer to the level of the most talented soccer players in the world and throughout history.
  5. Personal/Financial- wants to live on enough land to have their own soccer field with beautiful green grass and regulation size goals where he can train on his own and train his sons.
  6. Financial- would love to own a Porsche.
  7. Family- family and children are a main driver behind what they do; very strong family values in terms of thought of family generating a positive, supportive and feeling of purpose.
  8. Financial- wants to have a specific type of home- they have a picture of what their dream home would look like.
  9. Financial- wants to have 1 million dollars sitting in the bank.
  10. Travel- wants to travel all over the world.

Step 2- Auditory component- have the client think of music regardless of Genre that they FEEL would be most representative of the goals they want to accomplish…maybe the Soundtrack of the Life they are going to HAVE…or have them imagine they have all these now…what is the music or soundtrack is playing in the background that fits the movie of your life where they are the main actor, director, producer…etc…This is an important component so we have to get it right…just think of how important it is to get the right background music for the movies we love.

Step 3- I will take the pictures and perhaps even video footage of all the images that most powerfully represents the life the client wants to have and create a 3 to 8 minute movie with the background music they want…this can always be modified, if they have 200 pictures and need it to be 15 minutes that’s fine…all doable…if they are an athlete have been fortunate enough to capture peak past performances on video and want that put in here, we can do that as well. The point here is that we will take the “vision board” and now make it into a movie…their movie…and if done correctly…it should be one of the best movies they will ever watch.

Step 4- Assuming that we have created the clip and that the client has a video IPOD to watch the clip when they wake up and before they go to bed every morning along with multiple times during the day to commit it to memory…we begin NLP technique, not sure what we call it but it would pull the basic process from the New Behavior Generator technique.(note ** we can put the video in quick time format or even on a disk if the client does not have a video IPOD, but it not necessarily a must.)

* We would build rapport and elicit criteria.

* We would have client close their eyes and picture all the goals that they want to accomplish…if they’ve committed their personalized clip to memory…the next step should be easy.

* Next, have him/her begin to notice particular nuances about all the images in their mind that represent the goals they want to accomplish. If it is the goal of becoming a black belt represented by a short clip of Bruce Lee, then they will notice his confidence, feel his quickness etc…if it is the goal of being physically fit represented by a picture vs. video clip of a few seconds….they can still notice particular nuances…is there a sound associated with the image, can they notice how the person represented in image feels etc…if it is the image of the home or soccer field…same thing, they can notice how the grass feels on their feel, the color, how sunny is it outside, the breeze….background music…

* Next, open eyes…and then go back in or rather take a deep breath and STEP INTO IT, only this time, have the client replace put themselves into all aspects of the movie…replace people in video clips with themselves…if it is already a clip of themselves…they can relive it now with added intensity…if it was a material thing like a car…now have them feel themselves driving it…their hands on the steering wheel...the sound of the engine…if it is an image of a fit physique vs. a video clip...while, the music is playing in their head, have them push the image out up to the right and snap it into themselves….or another version of visual squash…

* Next, open eyes, take a deep breath and STEP INTO IT…and REPEAT.
