Captains Chair:
This is the month of freedom here in the US, with the 4th of July, and in Canada with Canada Day, in fact, most countries have a day of independence or freedom from some sort of oppression. Do you celebrate your freedom? Do you have a personal independence day?
What areas of your life would you like to have more control over, what areas are you working on? Do you ever feel phony helping a client, who is working on something, and you have the same problem?
By admitting that you need to progress in areas is the first step to freedom. By knowing you are a work in progress allows you to change and explore. Being open to new ideas and trying new things opens one up to amazing possibilities.
I bring this up as I was working with a client, who wanted to fix his quick to anger problem. I gathered the information, and we did several NLP techniques, and direct hypnosis and he is doing great.
I left the first sessions, and knew this was an area that I have let get a little out of hand recently. In fact I would bypass upset and go directly to really angry!
I did some inventory on the issue and noticed my self talk (see Theory) and picked up on the fact I was constantly saying to myself, “Man that xxx, really pisses me off”, or “What an idiot, I have a right to be angry.”
Right or wrong, justified or not, it was bothering me, and I knew it was my responsibility to change my state of mind, beliefs, attitude, and behavior, on this subject. We have the keys of change at our finger tips, and I knew what I needed to do.
This is not to say we will not have things bother us, but that we control our internal states, rather than they control us!
I bring this up because I have been asked by several of you to have a Wounded Healer, Heal the Healer Weekend, and this is the types of things we can work on. I ask you be honest about any problems you may be having, so we can work on them in a small group setting (probably no more that 8 to 12) and have some fun declaring our independence from anything holding us back. We have picked the emotional date of September 11 for this event, to not let the past or fear control us. Call for details.
The trainings at the NGH still have openings for this upcoming conference. These are great trainings! If you know anyone who wants to take NLP, let them know. Also, anyone who wants to repeat the Basic or new Masters course, there are a few opening in New Hampshire at the NGH with a special “Review” price of $150.00. See Marketing at the end of this e-zine for details.
From the Road:
This month I had the opportunity to do a teleconference that had 150 people on the line. It was sponsored by the NGH and you can download the entire call at their web site. We will have on our site soon for you to hear. To those of you that joined, I hope you enjoyed it, and I look forward to doing more of them in the future.
Theory into Practice:
Does Weight control begin with mind control?
By Wil Horton, Psy. D.
After working with thousands of people for weight loss, and seeing some people succeed very easily and others struggle, I began to gather information on the thought process of both those who lose weight easily and those who do not.
The results were both simple and yet profound in their implication. How and what a person thinks will be the greatest indicator of the level of success. Daily self talk is the key.
51,000 Thoughts per day, helping you or harming you?
Neuroscientists have long known that most people in the world carries on an ongoing inner dialog of self talk, and it has a rate of between 150 and 300 words, this means the average person has between 45,000 and 51,000 thoughts per day. In fact I would dare say you cannot go more than 10 seconds without self talk, unless you have mastered meditation, or self hypnosis.
Most of this self talk is basically harmless general thoughts, but negative self talk and thoughts starts into motion a self fulfilling prophecy, that can propel you to your goals, or stop you dead in your tracks!
Look at these two people:
One forces herself from bed in the morning, saying to herself, “I wish I didn’t have to get up for work another day.” She goes on and sits at the table saying to herself “Crap! Today is the day xxxx comes in, this is going to be a horrible day. I feel terrible. I think I will eat something to get me going.” “Losing weight is so hard, I guess I will struggle with my weight forever.” (Then she grabs a donut or something else that will sabotage her weight program.
The other person, gets up and says to herself, “Today is a great day to be alive.” This person looks in the mirror and thinks, “Looking good! The weight is really falling off. Losing weight is easy and I feel better than I have in years.” She goes on, “I think I will work out some before I eat something. I deserve to be good to myself.” (She does this and then eats a piece of fruit for breakfast.)
How do you think these two would rate on a self esteem scale? What about their weight programs?
(By the way, the above is the same person, the first before hypnosis when she weighed 223 pounds, the second after 1 year weighing 140.)
Athletes may hold the key.
One day I was at the gym working out and noticed a personal trainer working with a person who said to the trainer, “I hate working out. I hate exercising. I only do it because I have to.”
The trainer stopped him and stated, “You know I really can’t help you until we change your mind set. All the work we do will be for nothing, because you will stop and sabotage this as soon as you can.” The trainer then lead him over to a couple of people (who were in great shape, looked great, and oozed vitality) and asked them their thoughts about working out. They immediately responded with, “Can’t wait to get here…best thing I do for myself all day…my body needs this…a day without exercising is like a day without breathing.”
I stopped and looked around the room. It did not take a rocket scientist (or psychologist) to figure out if you loved to work out, you would. The thought of not working out would be alien.
True change comes from your inner beliefs and core ideals. I thought of people who eat healthy, they had the same processes going on that I had about exercising!
You reap what you sow.
This old rule also applies to our thoughts as well. Many of us have those limiting core beliefs and ideals that cause us to fail time and time again, they sabotage us at every opportunity. Is it possible that you could be saying things to yourself that stops your success?
My weight loss clients that do not do as well constantly say things like, “Losing weight is so hard. My whole family is fat. Weight loss is a struggle.”
These constant limiting negative thoughts form core beliefs and ideals that will be with you forever.
Change your mind, change your body.
Negative beliefs and ideals can be replaced with positive suggestions! These need to be repeated both in and out of trance, until they become your self talk. These suggestions must be positive, in the present, I am, I will, I do, I xxxx, is the format.
They have to be short, to the point and SIMPLE! If a 5 year old would not understand, they will not be as effective.
They need to be repeated 5 to 15 time several time a day, both in and out of trance. The more you declare these beliefs, the quicker your brain will force them into reality!
Types of suggestions that work:
I eat less and enjoy it more!
I keep the weight I desire… xxx pounds!
I love exercising!
Techniques and Tips:
You can do this on yourself, or with a client.
Rewriting Your Inner Dialog
1. Develop several positive self suggestions about your goals.
2. Think of something that is true about you, (you like kids, you work well with people, etc.) let this belief take a shape, image, color, sound, feeling.
3. Relax yourself and think of something you do every morning.
4. Watch a movie of your self doing the activity, add a full sound track, hear your voice saying the suggestions several times.
5. Watch the movie, again. Notice how natural you seem with the new inner dialog.
6. Step into the movie. Do the activity as you hear your new inner dialog.
7. Repeat again. Hear and feel it in every cell of your body.
8. Feel the inner dialog merge with the self belief from #2. Have it become the same color, sound, feeling.
9. Practice this consciously each day.
Try this for several days and notice the results.
