Captains Chair:
It has been a super busy few weeks. After a busy spring doing weight loss and stop smoking seminars, I had the chance to spend a day on the USS Nassau, as it came back from her 274 day deployment in the mid-east. The sacrifices these young men and women make should be acknowledged. It was pleasure to meet these fine young people who just completed a grueling sea/war tour, and watch the excitement build as they were “coming home.” To be there as they were reunited with their families after the separation was inspirational. It was also touching to watch fathers, see for the first time children that were born while they were at sea. I talked to one young officer who’s son was born 2 weeks after he left, and now he was going to meet his almost 10 month child. I was proud to be there and share time with my daughter and those serving for their country. I also forgot what mess deck coffee was really like. Reality check: While I was aboard, of course it brought back memories of my service, but the eye opener to me was when you realize that the officers and senior NCO’s (non commissioned officers) are your kids age, that is something humbling.
After this I was off to India for a set of NLP courses. I have had the honor of going to India 7 of the last 8 years. (2001 was canceled due to the terrorist attacks.) It is a joy to teach those hungry for NLP/hypnosis and share with the world these techniques that can improve all aspects of your life. I feel deeply touched to have been able to teach in India, New Zealand, Holland, The United Arab Emirates, and Canada the last few years. I hope all you trainers out there get the same pleasure in teaching these techniques to the new people as I do. I also had the chance while in India to record some new products, more on that later.
Theory into practice:
I was watching a news program that showed how the brain functions and some of the exciting new things we are learning in this arena. It was shown that people who respond with a low tolerance to pain actually process the nerve signals in a different way than those with a higher tolerance for pain do. In those that report high pain their brains receive the nerve signals deep in the sub-cortex, and then the signals go out to the areas that process physical responses in the higher levels of the brain. In those that report higher pain tolerance the signals stay in the deeper levels and are not processed.
This brings to mind several possibilities, is this a natural trait or a learned behavior? Can one be taught to keep the signals from reaching the higher levels, thereby stopping the perception of pain at its base? I propose that we could install a filter, using NLP and Hypnosis, that would block most pain signals from reaching the areas where they will cause discomfort, or lower them to smaller levels. This could be done for those with chronic pain, and the types of pains that have had the medical reasons looked at.
Maybe this is what people do when they are too busy, or to involved in something to let the pain stop them. (Think of athletes who continue on broken bones, people in crisis who do the same, or even a busy mom who does not have time to get sick.) Next time, a model for the Pain Filtering System, based on how athletes block pain. (If you have info on this please contact me.)
Technique and Tips:
NLPer Quest
By Ahmed Hakami, Ph.D.
NLP is the human natural tendency to master life. Isn’t it right, that all everyone tries hard to obtain in this life is about mastery. Mastery is the ability to be in control while handling whatever we experience. Hence, Dilts puts it wonderfully “NLP is whatever works”. Studying NLP takes the student to every possible direction in life; thinking of mind, sensing of body, and emoting of soul and all other possible various mixtures. With NLP student is in quest of being a master (to an extent) in the major roles we can play in this life; supporting, communicating, and performing. Every role of these is based in its functioning upon the major phases of being human; mind, body and spirit. Therefore, we are supporting/communicating/performing mentally, physically and emotionally (spiritually). And of course, we do all that either positively or negatively, cause it is a mechanism that accept any given fuel.
Supporter Role:
In this role, we play a spiritual and emotional features of being human, when we consider our or others needs. Supporting here takes the form of helping others out of any limitations and providing them with enhancing resources. And as well, we play the mental support role, by finding all promising information and technologies about how our mind works, and how can we improve its work and how fix the mechanism when there is a need. Finally, we play the physical support, when we involve in rescue, defending the acquisitioned rights, besides the physical participation in work, sports and other physical activities. It is all about how can we help ourselves, others and everything else on planet to get improved and getting better.
Many of NLP techniques start from the supporter’s role, as we give a support to ourselves by seeking for help or applying techniques to our needs. Also, we play the supporter role, when we help others, when we become NLP practitioners regardless of the form that support takes.
Communicator Role: as an emotional feature, it is about how we care to convey our thoughts and feelings to and with self (consciousness and meta levels of awareness), others and everything shares us living on earth. How to understand ourselves and others, and how can that be utilized through communication, to expose the unity of the universe. And as mental feature, we initiate and feed science and arts that help communication as a tool to be almost perfect tool to play the expected role.
On the physical aspect, our communication either verbal or nonverbal is considered a physical energy. Energy that can be utilized and improved whenever we decode its systemic structure and find how it is effect the whole system.
NLP gives the communication role the respect it deserves. As we can’t to not communicate. Therefore, NLP concerns the communication components not only in human but even in artificial systems (Cybernetics), and provide methodology and techniques that enrich the process.
Performer Role: is our mental feature, when use the power of mind to achieve any goal. We start any performing work within our mind where a mental, emotional and physical interactions occur. Then we produce accordingly. Motivation is an example of the emotional side of performing role. We have an emotion that push us towards a performance which can take many form. And of course most of the performance role is represented physically. All our behaviors either in a competitive way or in the normal daily living activities.
NLP invades the performing territory from every corner. Working on systemic thinking in the mental side. And taking care of the believe, values as spiritual/emotional aspects. And improving the physical performance in every field.
NLP handles every role carefully, by establishing a theoretical background about it, and then has proper techniques to improve that role or does needed changes that produce a new form for that role.
Exercise
Now, bearing in mind the major roles you play in life; do the following exercise and see how good you are as supporter, communicator and performer. On scale of 0-10 evaluate your current competency in stages of life. (To make it easy, think only in the positive aspects, for now)
Stage Supporter Communicator Performer
Self
Family
Friends
Work
Others
Totals
Now, How do you think about your levels, and how do you feel about your thoughts! For example you may think you are low as a family supporter, and feel sad being like that.
Role Think Feel
SupporterCommunicator
Performer
Now, repeat the exercise and willingly imagine that NLP can grant your only 3 additional points, notice the change in thoughts and feelings.
How do you experience NLP,
Does it sound bright!
Does it feel rhythmically!
Does it look familiar!
Conclusion
NLP as a natural tendency toward mastery, hold a realistic solution to most of our problems. And suggests the best adjustment and improvement to be at the peak. People who are opened minded look to NLP and such sciences and arts from all possible angles. Finding the sky is the only limitation.
