Captain’s Log:
As we are winding down from the past year, I am reminded how this is the time we make plans and focus on goals and objectives for the new year, all well and good, and I will focus on that in 2 weeks in a New Years special e-zine. I would like to challenge you to do something a little different. Have you really examined the past year? Did you take a fearless and through inventory of your life in 2009? All of your actions, inactions, fears, thoughts and interactions with people places and things? 2009 was a tough year for many, yet miraculous things did happen. How did you react, as the only true constant in the universe is change.
It was a tough year for me personally and professionally, and I will not sugar coat it with “everything went great” Pollyanna. It went the way it went, but I believe life is a journey and no one said it would all be a downhill joy ride. As I look back however I realize the joys and good times far out weigh the rough experiences.
Writing a script is where you write what you think should happen and expect others to follow your script, even though they do not know the script. Did you write any scripts that then the events did not turn out the way you wanted? Look back at them and see if your reaction would have been different if you would have not had a preset script, and let the experience flow?
“Staining” is a term used to describe the phenomenon of letting one or two bad things ruin an other wise great time. Have you ever seen someone take one event, a spilled drink on a dress/shirt and say it spoiled the whole party? Some of us can remember when we were single and a great party would be remembered as a bummer because we did not “hook-up”. (Note women would go out dance and remember a great time as that was their goal, guys however…) Did you stain any part of the last year? Did you let the economy stain other aspects of your life? On a macro level we see it in politics and the reaction to events.
Remove the Stain is where you remember events dispassionately and reconstruct new reactions to them. (There is a new technique in this !) By doing this it allows a clean view of the past; remember those who do not remember the past are bound to repeat it, but I would say, those who do not truly remember the past, and remove the emotion are bound to repeat the same mistakes.
On a macro level, did all the civil restrictions after 9-11 really make us safer? Will repeating them help when faced with a new threat? Same with our personal life, remember the NLP presupposition, “If what you’re doing is not working, do something else."
So I ask that you take a few moments and review the year, take inventory of it, because how can you plan where you want to go, if you have no starting point?
We will follow this up next time!
Personal Note: I am in a play that opens this week and it really helped me in other areas. Let’s just say it was not going the way I had hoped. After moping, resisting, and acting out, (staining and script writing!) I decided to just accept the fact, it is what it is, and it will turn out the way it will turn out. My job is to be the best I can be in the part(s) and help the others, if they want it. This caused me to look at the positives that are coming from the experience, meeting new people, expanding my circle, and pushing myself to do my best. Talent is expanding when you push yourself to do things you are not comfortable with. Heck, I dance, sing, and even do some comedy mentalism… it is a burlesque review.
Burke Allen and Allen Media Strategies is holding another media training weekend in the Washington DC area in March. I attended this training last year and it was great and helped me get 60 plus radio interviews and more to come!
Recently I had a “past life” moment, which I find fascinating. I was standing backstage at the show I am in and I had that feeling I have done this before. I was standing there in a Tux, ready to do a comedy bit watching the show girls (yes, tough life) and with the lights and 1920’s music and the smoky effect (we are using misters for smoke effect) and I felt, not only have I been here before, but it felt right. I always wondered why I love theater when I never saw a show till I was in one at 21! I understand the research that points to neurological misfiring causing the déjà vu experience, but I believe in other things and these things are more a matter of the heart. More on this later. Speaking of past life, our friend and NLP trainer and world expert in past life Georgina Cannon will be in New York City and will be seeing clients while there. Call 416-489-0333 for details. Theory into Practice:
Are Your Feelings Your Own? Using the Principles of Quantum Psychology for a Happier Life
By William D Horton, Psy.D. Psychologist and Master NLP Trainer
Have you ever been around someone who gave off a feeling of negative energy? Perhaps you were in a perfectly good mood before encountering this person, and after being in their presence for just a few moments, your mood changed for the worse in spite of the fact that you had no negative interactions. Conversely, how about shiny happy people? Have you ever felt your mood uplifted just by being in the presence of a perpetually happy person? How in tune are you with your partner or best friend? Do you ever come up with the same thought at the same time?
Many people explain these phenomena off as mere coincidence; however, we are learning from the exciting new field of quantum psychology that there may be more to these types of interactions than we ever thought possible. Not only that, but there is very likely a scientific explanation for such amazing mental synchronicities.
Quantum psychology is a relatively new area of study into the human mind. The science is based upon the logic of quantum physics, which gives us insight into how our universe works at its tiniest observable levels. Interestingly, what quantum physicists have learned about our subatomic universe may also explain many of the mysteries of the human mind – and human consciousness.
One of the principles of quantum physics, which seems to have a bearing on quantum psychology, is what is known as quantum entanglement (a.k.a. “spooky action at a distance.”) The principle of quantum entanglement, which has borne out experimentally in mathematics and in the laboratory, states that whenever a pair of subatomic particles has an interaction, they become forever entangled with one another. Once entanglement occurs, those two particles are forever linked, and whatever affects one of the pair of particles will affect the other, as well. Time, distance and space between the particles does not matter in the slightest. Not only that, but when one particle is affected, the other is also affected instantaneously.
It is theorized that particle interaction resulting in quantum entanglement occurred at the Big Bang, which theoretically means that every sub-atomic particle in the universe is entangled with every other sub-atomic particle in the universe in a sort of web of interlinked particles. No matter where each particle exists in space or time, those links remain in place and information received by one particle is instantaneously received by every other particle in the entire universe. This interconnected web has been called the zero point field, or more recently, the scalar field. In New Age circles, this sub-atomic web is often referred to as the “collective consciousness.”
What does all of this have to do with human consciousness and quantum psychology? As tiny pieces of the universe, each of us is made up of the same stuff as the rest of the universe on a sub-atomic level. Our bodies and our minds are made up of these entangled sub-atomic particles that receive and respond to information instantaneously.
This sub-atomic web – the zero point field – offers up a potential explanation for the scenarios that we examined above. What appears to be a coincidental synchronicity – for example when you and your partner have the same thought at exactly the same moment – may actually be the sub-atomic particles of both of your minds receiving the same information instantaneously. It can also explain why your mood may be affected by the happy person in the room – or by the crabby one – in spite of the fact that you haven’t interacted with either of them.
The question then becomes why we don’t experience occurrence that everyone and everything else in the universe is experiencing at the same time they do. The explanation lies in filtering. As a survival mechanism, humans have become very adept at putting filters in place in order to sift through all of the information that bombards us on every level. Without the filters, we would be constantly inundated with so much information that we would barely be able to function; therefore, we have adapted to sift through information so we experience only those pieces of information that we find relevant to our own personal points of view.
If we are able to experience and be affected by the moods and feelings of others without ever physically interacting with them, is there a way in which we can adapt in order to filter out those feelings that we don’t want to experience? Can we reset our filters?
The answers can be found in neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and hypnosis. Both of these processes are powerful ways to set your own personal filters in such a manner that you are not adversely affected by the negativity of others. Both modalities are a wonderful adjunct to quantum psychology, allowing you to work with your mind on the subconscious level where all of your filters reside.
In hypnosis, your subconscious is accessed through deep relaxation. Once a hypnotic state is achieved, your mind is open and suggestible to change. Simple post-hypnotic suggestions made in a trance state can help you to build a defense against negativity, or, conversely, be more open to intuition and positive messages.
NLP differs from hypnosis in that there is no need for a trance state. Instead, NLP works by anchoring certain thoughts, feelings and behaviors that can then be self-activated through the use of simple physical triggers.
As you can see, there is really no reason why you need to be affected by the negative energy of another. When such a negative energy transfer occurs, many are unaware of what has happened, and they assume that what they are experiencing is their own “mood.” You can avoid this by simply being aware of the process by which interactions occur, and by providing yourself with the appropriate tools to counteract such interactions. In doing so, you just may experience a whole new universe in which you are a happier, more positive person.
