Captains Chair:

As this e-zine is hitting your email, I will be taking an exam for my master level Alcohol and Drug Counselor status. This will allow national Certification. It is an oral exam that is scheduled for one hour. Even after all these years (20) doing CADC work, testing can raise butterflies. I used several of our NLP techniques to prep for the exam, and of course I will use all the anchors during the test. This reminds me of the oral exam I had to take for my psychologist license. This taught me the uses of state management. Next month I will break down the techniques I used, and give you the steps. As I prepped for this, it made me look at the old sayings, “You can do anything; you’re only limited by what you think about it. Success is dependent upon attitude.” A lot of us say that, but do we live it? I have been procrastinating about this exam for two years. All the excuses were that, excuses, not valid reasons. Fear of failure, fear of success, feeling of backing up, or just plain lazy about it? Who knows? The way through this is to do, realize this, and commit to the act. This is also true on the physical side. Do you really believe that the only limiting factor is your thoughts? Do you really believe that your mind can overcome physical limitations? I had to face this also. I have been taking martial arts for the last 14 years. I have a 3rd degree black belt in Ryu Kyu Kempo, and a 1st degree in Shoto-kan, (both traditional Japanese styles.) I am comfortable in these styles. I competed in several tournaments last year, but do I have the course to challenge my self with a new style, ONE THAT IS UNFAMILAR? All the thoughts ran through my head, “Can I do it after three knee reconstructions? Am I to old? I asked myself what I would tell one of my students in NLP if they asked this. I would tell them that we are blessed to have all these NLP/hypnosis skills at our finger tips, of course you can, and you’re only limited by your thoughts. Recently, I have started a Tae Kwon Do class, and it is a challenge, but one that I am looking forward to. What are you doing to challenge yourself this year? What fears are you facing down? Lets all walk the walk.

Theory into Practice:

I was recently rewriting the Basic NLP manual, and was laying out the steps for the Computer Swish and I thought back to how I developed this technique.

I was working with a young smoker in his teens. I decided to do the Swish Pattern with him so he could also do it at home. When I asked him to imagine a camera and the shutter in the lens opening (classical swish) he sat for a moment then looked at me and asked me what a shutter was. He had never used a camera with a shutter, he used digital cameras. Now it was my turn to go blank. As I was searching for another slant on this, he asked, “Can I use a computer?”

It was like the sky opened and someone handed me the tablets from on high. This was great! A computer opens up talk of how your mind works, software, and your brain, hardware, what a great lead in. It is also easy to talk of how your mind/brain works fast, and if we change the programming, the hardware will follow.

From the mouth of babes another technique! Enjoy!

Techniques:

Computer Swish

By Wil Horton

1. Imagine the problem – see it through your eyes VAK.

2. Imagine the ideal you – the you that would never have this problem. The ideal you – looking, acting, being – way beyond the problem.

3. Imagine a computer screen – see the problem. Imagine the mouse in your hand. Notice the icon.

4. Double-click and watch the problem disappear, and instantly replace with the ideal you.

5. Repeat 5 times. (the problem will have trouble returning.)

6. Drag the problem to the trash folder – have it go to the same area where things are you would never do again.

This is a great way to track how fast your brain works. FAST. The technique opens up to talk about rewriting programs, once changed, the system runs differently.

From the Road:

(We apologize for the tardiness at printing this article. It had been intended for the December ezine before the New Year but...fortunately, as we all know, resolutions are made every day.)

Hypnotherapy and those Annual New Year’s Resolutions

Faith Wood, Inspiring Minds

As 2005 rapidly approaches, it is time once again to reflect upon the outcomes of our 2004 resolutions. Did we succeed at our goal or, are we planning to make the same resolutions in 2005 hoping this year will be different?

In most cases, those well intentioned annual resolutions last only a few days or weeks. After that, most people find themselves side-tracked form their goals and hear themselves expressing those all too familiar excuses defending their lack of focus…..life got in the way, I’m just too busy at work right now, family commitments,…TIME!

So, what is wrong with our good intentions, will power and knowing exactly what we need to do in order to be happy, healthy and prosperous? Well, nothing. Its just that, often, our great intentions fall away in favour of entrenched or habitual daily responses to life. Good intention, will power and wisdom require nourishment from within the mind in order to flourish. With hypnosis, you can access those resources which nourish your own wisdom and strength, turning your New Year’s Resolutions into lasting achievements.

Most of the time, we are unaware of the decisions and actions that our bodies are initiating from moment to moment. Sitting, walking, breathing, talking – all seem to happen without any conscious participation; we simply take these programs for granted. Yet, are we not simply the authors of all of this, at some level? Ask the new mother of a pre-mature baby if she takes the child’s ability to breathe on their own for granted? The recovering stroke patient if the act of talking and walking are really such a simple task. These automatic behaviours were produced through repetition. Once mastered, we allow the action or behaviour to become automatic, leaving our conscious minds free to focus on other tasks. That is the positive side. The bad news is that automatic (habitual) behaviours are difficult to change through conscious effort. A new forming behaviour simply does not have the benefit of time and strength to compete with such a long term (habitual) behaviour. Fortunately, there are ways to introduce new behaviours directly into the subconscious mind where habits and long term memory reside. By introducing new responses, behaviours directly into the sub-conscious, we can challenge a bad habit with adequate strength.

That is why, hypnotherapy can make quitting smoking, losing weight, biting nails, and many other negative habits seem natural and easy to eliminate. It is also important to recognize that not only habits can become rigid or entrenched. In fact, many of our convictions and attitudes, once formed, seem to live lives of their own as well, in spite of ourselves. Sometimes this can be to our advantage, but when it is not, proper intervention can bring a lot of relief and healing.

A good hypnotherapist can help you to recognize what is holding you back from achieving the life that you desire to have. They can assist in guiding you through a process which replaces damaging attitudes with ones that provide more benefit and value. Success at all levels is an attitude. By focusing on what you want rather than what you don’t want, you can begin a process of achieving a balanced and healthy life.

Many people just hope that with the New Year, their fears, depressions, feelings of emptiness, attachment to a relationship that ended, or whatever else hurts – physically or emotionally, will simply go away. Time can be a great healer, but it is slow. With hypnotherapy, desired results can be obtained much faster.

If your New Year’s Resolutions are coming up with something like “I am going to become a golf pro”, or “I am going to start living life to the fullest”, or “I am going to get in shape, tone my muscles and/or my mind”, with a little hypnotic exercise, these dreams will begin to shift into reach. It is always easier to accomplish something when you believe that you have done it before. Hypnosis uses the power of your own mind to create an expectation of success! With hypnosis, you can experience things before you actually do them in reality for the first time.

Isn’t it time to start living the life you deserve? Imagine how good you will feel when you achieve your New Year’s resolutions. Success is an attitude, so what are you focusing on?
