Something to think about from Dr. Wil Horton

Intro to NLP Today E-Zine

NLP Today E-Zine is a monthly series of articles that will bring you the best information in the world of NLP and Hypnosis. We will bring you articles that have been proven in the real world. Heavy with techniques and information you can use in your daily life, whether it's as a therapist with clients, business or sales, or just for self-development. We will get you the information you want and can't get. We focus on proven applications, not theory. Our trainers all "do the work." This is the difference that makes the difference. We cut the fluff and bring the main course. Mental Food you can use. NFNLP is the leader in this type of technology.

This is a service of the National Federation of NeuroLinguistic Psychology and Dr. Wil Horton. We want people to achieve their highest potential, and NLP is the #1 tool for this. If you feel you have been added to this list in error, check out an issue, and then let us know if you would like to be removed.

You can achieve your dreams.

Captains Chair:

Events of the past week bring into reality, that the best plans can go wrong. When the space shuttle experienced the horrible accident, it made a lot of us look at how fragile human life really is. It also pointed out that no matter how much we know, or how well we plan, unexpected things can happen. NASA has some of the world's best and brightest, and yet these things happen. Something as small as a broken tile, a loose wire, or a ½ of 1 % change can alter everything. It also shows us we cannot possibly plan for everything.

The space pioneers have courage that few of us have. To risk everything to follow their dreams into space is amazing. They bring out the hope in all of us. To reach for the stars.

I wonder how many of us are following our dreams? How many dare to reach for those far off stars, to boldly go where few dare? To live your life the way you want? When these types of things happen, it might be a tribute to those that fell expanding science, and the reach of human existence, to decide, if only in a small way, to reach for one of your dreams. What is something you always wanted to do? Make a plan, figure out a way, and do it.

Sometimes, however, personal fears hold us back. We may need help in slaying those inner demons.

For those that may be interested, we are planning a new seminar. This seminar will be a "Turning Fear into Power" seminar/retreat in Sarasota and Boston. This seminar will include the flying trapeze experience, a true reach for sky time. The entire weekend will be focused on your setting up some personal dreams and goals, and getting the tools to "GO FOR IT!" See the marketing info for more details.

With the space shuttle accident, and the over whelming brooding of war, I hope that all of you use your skills to help others reach for their dreams. I also ask that you pray for peace.

From The Road:

As some of you know, I have been on the road doing public seminars. As always, they are challenging, as well as rewarding. After this weekend's Solid Gold NGH in Las Vegas, I will be in Florida getting some down-time, writing, training, and planning the Fear into Power Retreat. Then, it is back out on the road again. If you are near one of the cities I will be doing a seminar in, plan on attending. (Bring your business cards; you may get some leads/referrals.)

Theory into Practice:

It is that time of year again, when people are starting exercise programs, and turning to us for help in keeping with it. Here is some information that may help.

A recent study pointed out that a little pep talk and exercise can bring bring health benefits if you suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. A study reviewed in the British Medical Journal compared four groups with CFS. One group got standard care: a medical exam and advice on exercising and positive thinking; the other three got an exam, and met with team members who designed an exercise program for them and explained their symptoms in a way that encouraged them to start exercising.

84% of those that met with team members reported being "very much better," or "much better," as compared with 12% of the standard care group.

Though we do not know the exact cause of CFS, lack of physical exercise seems to play a role and contributes to its worsening. Unfortunately, people have misconceptions about symptoms and it leads many to avoid activity and exercise, which worsens the syndrome.

More reasons to exercise:

Some people find leisure time so stressful, it literally makes them sick! A study of 1900 adults in Holland indicated this interesting fact. An equal, if not larger, percentage of Americans may have similar trouble enjoying time off. The lead researcher, Ad Vingerhoets of Tilburg University finds perfectionists, people with a strong sense of responsibility at work, and those who have difficulty balancing work and personal life were most at risk. A large number complained of headaches, nausea, and flu-like symptoms during weekends and vacations.

If time off make you tense, or you find it difficult to leave work issues, try this:

Exercise Friday nights and at the start of vacations. It is relaxing and can "facilitate the physiological transition from work to leisure," Vingerhoets says. "Many people, especially men, regret in later life that they did not spend enough time with their children," he goes on. It can also be said many regret not developing hobbies and their physical bodies.

Remember that vacations are not a luxury. Research shows that they help you to live longer. Strive for a better balance between work and other elements of your life. Remind yourself that investing in your family, hobbies, and social life is just as important as investing in your career.

Technique and Tips:

The Resource Manager

By Tristan Roberts

I created this technique for a client who was having difficulties in business because she was terrible with numbers. In fact, numbers almost didn't seem to exist for her. When she hears numbers, she just stops listening. Yet this client loves words and is a creative writer.

The technique takes the submodalities of a resource that a person uses well, and maps them over to a resource that they misuse. It could be more specific than numbers-words, as with a client 1 had who couldn't balance his checkbook but could recite all kinds of baseball statistics.

Other "resources" that could be managed better with this technique: time, space (for someone who is a slob, or for someone who habitually violates 'personal space) money, friends, education, etc.

1. Elicit the submodalities of the problem resource (A).

2. Elicit the submodalities of a resource (B) that the person commands effectively, or even has an "uncanny" command of (most people have one - pop trivia, people's faces, etc.).

3. Change the submodalities of A to match those of B.

4. Test it. Have the person notice how they already see things differently.

5. (Optional) Very often the person's mind will make some additional changes to the submodalities of A that are more uniquely fitting to that resource. Have them notice these additional changes and test if they are useful or not.

This technique could also be used somewhat in reverse, to make distinctions between resources (e.g., someone who is good with money but who alienates people by treating them exactly the same way).
