Since it is the holiday season, I will keep this issue very brief.
I would like to bring to your attention several articles you may want to check out. In the October issue of Discover, they had a great article on a topic dear to a lot of us Mind Control. The article brings up several great topics.
First, the article titled “The Myth of Mind Control” asks the question, "Will anyone ever decode the human brain?" It goes into detail about how each person has a unique syntax, is there an underlying neural code we all share? According Neuro-scientist S. Ramachandran of the University of California, “our notions are still very primitive.” They estimate the brain performs at least one quadrillion operations a second. (And I can’t remember to close a cabinet!) A lot of this work goes back to the 1964 work of Jose Delgado of Yale university. He implanted electrodes and controlled the behavior of bulls in a Spanish bullring. He later did work on cats, monkeys, chimps, and human psychiatric patients. His book, written in 1969, “Physical Control of the Human Mind: Toward a Psychocivilized Society”, covered the possibilities. This leads to the area explored in the movie, “The Manchurian Candidate”. (I think every NLPer and Hypnotist should see the original and the recent remake.)
Before you say none of this is possible, look at your cell phone, if you’re over 40, did you ever imagine we would all be carrying these things, or GPS', or shooting lasers into the eye to fix vision?
The second from the Stanford report, October 24, talks of a discovery of shells used for sounds, and how this sheds light on an ancient society. The find in Peru, talks of the mind shaping importance of rituals in supporting authority, and the use of sounds as a part of them.
The third from the Canadian Public Health Association, states that youngsters who suffered from multiple traumatic experiences, physical or psychological, have a higher incidence of developing arthritis. The research which studied almost 10,000 people showed a 27% greater risk for arthritis for those who suffered from more than one traumatic event as a child. The study looked at physical abuse, fearful experiences, hospitalizations, and parental disturbances.
The last is about the growing list of evidence of something that is near and dear to a lot of our hearts, the study of obesity. There was a study done by Dr. Steven Heymsfield of Columbia University and St. Luke’s-Roosevelt hospital, that pointed out that those who do not get enough sleep are much more likely to become overweight. (Could this be another reason hypnosis works well for weight loss, using relaxation techniques?) The study which followed 18,000 people, showed “That the growing scientific evidence that there is a link between sleep and the various neural pathways that regulate food intake is true,” states Heymsfield. Sleep deprivation also lowers leptin, a blood protein that regulates appetite and seems to effect how the body senses when it has had enough food. Loss of sleep also raises levels of grehlin, a substance that makes you want to eat.
From the Road:
From Beryl Comar, Trainer from Dubai:
Never let where you come from, or who you are, stop you from getting to where you want to go or from being who you want to be.
So often I hear people say "My past is holding me back" or "What do you expect, this is who I am" These are some of the most limiting excuses that can be used to justify your failure to perform to your, or someone else's, expectations.
Firstly your past cannot hold you back, it is always you who won't let go. Your past is exactly that, your past. It is only you, by your constant reference to it, that keeps it alive. All too often I have met people who keep their past between them and their future. They complain that things never seem to work out for them, that life seems to be an endless repetition of the same old thing.
Secondly you are only who you think you are and you can change who you are merely by changing who you think you are. It is only your image of yourself and where you think you fit into the world that determines who you are.
There are people, who still today, use their upbringing, their childhood, the area they grew up in, the political situation and any other excuse that they can think of to justify their current performance, behaviour and position. How sad. By clinging to these feeble excuses they deny themselves the opportunity to grow. In any situation there are those who choose to complain and justify and there are those who choose to change and grow. And they use NLP to make those changes.
How many people do you know who grew up in exactly the same circumstances yet they chose to grow beyond the "limitations of their past" and break out of the mould that would have kept them locked into the behaviour patterns of their environment. They made a conscious decision to break out and live a life of their choosing and their making.
Realize this, to get to where you are now you had to make many changes. You are no longer the child you were, you are no longer in the situation that you were in, except in your imagination. Understand that in order to grow you have got to let go. You have got to let go of limiting beliefs and of feeble excuses that deny your potential and justify your failure.
Where is it that you would like to go? Who would you like to become? All too often the reason that things do not change is that we have not made a decision as to where we want to go or who we want to be. The future is given to us as a limitless set of possibilities. It is up to us to choose the future that we want and then to take the appropriate action that will make that desired future a current reality.
The question is not "Can you change?" but rather "Will you change?" and then "When will you change?" Remember that you are a three dimensional being. The person you were, the person you are, and the person you can become. All growth in your life depends on you focusing on the person you can become and then concentrating on changing the behaviour of the person you are to ensure that you become the person you want to be. So "Never let where you come from, or who you are, stop you from getting to where you want to go or from being who you want to be."
Theory into Practice:
Content Rapport
This comes to us from Scott McFall, Trainer from North Dakota:
It seems like it is a matter of common sense, yet most people cannot or will not do it. Finding an area of agreement.
Keeping rapport through time or getting rapport back after it is interrupted is an important part of master practitioner skills.
Clients are with us inherently to change a belief. That does indicate that we are going to give them information new to them or that differs from what they are doing now.
In the last week I have been testing students in phone calls, at training and in cafeterias. Unfortunately I also have had to take a hard look at my own conversations.
It has come to my attention that we as an NLP culture might need a reminder about what Gene Z Laborde called dovetailed outcomes.
In any conversation in which you want to keep rapport your habit should be to find an area of agreement in what is being communicated to you. This means finding something about what is being said on which you can sincerely agree. Keep in mind that I am not suggesting that you placate the other person. I am simply suggesting that you notice the parts you do agree with first.
At that point you can start your comments with an area of agreement and ad your own points without losing rapport.
Some examples of phrases people use to screw this up would be, “I don’t agree with you” “No that’s not how it is”, “Well, that’s not how I see it”.
If you begin to ask yourself, "What is the intention of the other speaker?" you are more likely to find an area of agreement and be able to ad your point without issue.
This is all necessary since without rapport you are talking to yourself.
Here’s the basic idea; “Wow, I hear you, that is an interesting way to see it and I have also noticed...”
In seminars the way we get people to learn this process is to have them alternate between political positions. Student A plays the liberal and student B plays the conservative. Each person has the assignment of keeping rapport while discussing issues. The students then switch rolls and do it a second time. The exercise is harder when you are closest to your won particular beliefs.
You get the idea. Open contradiction is not the route to rapport. It can be necessary to disagree but you will need to know how to chunk up to get your rapport back.
Finding lost rapport will be the next topic.

The Power to Win: Achieving Peak Performance with Hypnosis and NLP - By Laura Boynton King
Laura Boynton King is a certified hypnotist and a founder and president of Summit Dynamics, LLC, a consulting service dedicated to helping people attain their goals through Hypnosis, NLP, and Self-Hypnosis. An enthusiastic and accomplished equestrian, she lives in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
One of the more frequent challenges faced by athletes is how to improve their performance. They express frustration that they often possess identical, if not superior, physical attributes to their competition, yet they're consistently being outperformed by that competition. In many cases, the problem is rooted in self-doubt and other beliefs that limit their level of performance.
Using self-hypnosis, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), and Time Line Therapy®, Laura Boynton King teaches the reader/rider how to stop dwelling on past failures and other negative feelings and images through stress-reduction techniques, positive imagery, and concentration- focusing skills.
Whether the rider feels held back by physical fear (for example, riding a livelier horse or jumping a higher fence than he or she is accustomed to), negative comments from a trainer or a horse show judge, or show-ring performance anxiety, here is a book designed to help replace a "losing" mentality with the winning edge. Full of valuable advice and illustrated with examples of how the author has helped well-known equestrians, THE POWER TO WIN is a valuable tool for all competitive or recreational riders-indeed, any athlete-at any level, as well as for instructors and parents. You can find these books on amazon.com $15.61 and Barnesandnoble.com $18.36

Bill O’Hanlon was the editor of the first NLP Newsletter (1978-1980) and studied with Milton Erickson in 1977 (he was Erickson’s gardener during that time, bartering for Erickson’s teaching). Bill has gone on to write 21 books and teach thousands of workshops around the world. Expanding his original mission of changing how therapy was practiced worldwide (he created Solution-Oriented Therapy), he is now passionate about helping people make the contributions they are meant to make. He does intensive seminars about how to write and publish books and how to teach compellingly and get on the workshop circuit. Bill and I bartered some online book writing and publishing coaching for me announcing several of his upcoming programs in this newsletter, so here is the first of those programs:
* * *
In this intensive seminar Bill O’Hanlon will teach you what he’s learned over the course of writing 21 books in the past 18 years. He has written both professional and trade (popular) books, worked with a number of publishers and several agents, been on Oprah, The Today Show and other national shows. He says he was not a natural author and developed strategies for getting a book completed and published.
He has refined this process, informally coaching friends and colleagues over the years (one friend he coached got a $30,000 advance) and because he gets so many requests for assistance, finally decided to offer it as a group seminar. Bill has offered this seminar several times. This time he has decided to expand it to a more intensive week-long format. The intensive will provide coaching and specific action plans for people interested in writing professional or popular (“trade”) books.
You will get detailed and individualized coaching on:
* The pros and cons of professional and trade markets
* To self-publish or not
* Identifying which market is right for your book
* How to focus your concept
* How to create a clear outline
* How to create a proposal to sell the book
* How to find a publisher and/or an agent
* How to get off your butt and write your book(s)
