Something to think about from Dr. Wil Horton
Intro to NLP Today E-Zine
NLP Today E-Zine is a monthly series of articles that will bring you the best information in the world of NLP and Hypnosis. We will bring you articles that have been proven in the real world. Heavy with techniques and information you can use in your daily life, whether it's as a therapist with clients, business or sales, or just for self-development. We will get you the information you want and can't get. We focus on proven applications, not theory. Our trainers all "do the work." This is the difference that makes the difference. We cut the fluff and bring the main course. Mental Food you can use. NFNLP is the leader in this type of technology.
This is a service of the National Federation of NeuroLinguistic Psychology and Dr. Wil Horton. We want people to achieve their highest potential, and NLP is the #1 tool for this. If you feel you have been added to this list in error, check out an issue, and then let us know if you would like to be removed.
You can achieve your dreams.
Wil’s Log:
This has been a rather hectic several weeks. Christina, my wife and the person who runs NFNLP, broke her ankle. As many of you know, she is an active trapeze and circus arts performer, so this was a huge set back for her. I had a trip planned for a training that I was forced to cancel, but family comes first. It was very frustrating for me to watch her being limited in her activities. It caused me to look again at what is important to me. Both of my in-laws and my father have had recent health issues, and I feel it is important for those of us who are care givers to clients, to not forget our families.
We did a Certified Basic NLP Practitioner training April 1- 4 in the new NLP Learning Center in Ft. Myers that went great. We had 10 students, and we hope to see many of them at the upcoming Masters and Trainers Training courses May16 and 19 respectively.
I was then off to Canada to do a NLP Basic Practitioner training at the Ontario Hypnosis Centre. As always, this event was sponsored by Georgina Cannon and it went extremely well. We welcomed 15 new NLPers into our fold.
The questions I hear a lot of at these trainings are, “How do I run an office that brings in fifty plus clients a week? Is it magic? What do I do?” Now that my students realize I have two offices doing exactly that, I really get the questions. This has lead me to offer two new courses:
Basic Hypnosis for the Professional Hypnotist. I have not taught a hypnosis course in the US since 1995. In this course, which fits the NGH guidelines, I will teach a course on not just hypnosis, but how to make a living at this field. I have been doing this since 1988, and have always been in this field. (or counseling with a short stint as Director for the Governors Commission for a Drug Free Indiana) I would like to share my experience with those of you who want to expand your skills. Look for the information in the Marketing section.
The other course I am now offering is Dynamics of Practice Building for those of you who are already practicing hypnotists and want to take your office to the next level. I know not all of you want to run a super practice seeing 60 clients a week, but for those wanting to take a small office and escalate to a huge one, we will guide you through the acceleration process. See the marketing section for details.
Someone recently shared a web link with me that I thought was interesting and would like to share it with you. It is about Harry Potter and has to do with metaphors with a lot of mental magick, some cool stuff for those who work with kids who have read the books, or big kids who have.

Theory into Practice:
Guess what most people tell me when they first learn that they need to work out to lose weight.
But I don't care about muscle, I just want to lose weight, look more toned, and to be fit.
I hear that almost every day, and I bet you've heard it by now as well. But does it make any sense?
Take your arms, for instance. You have muscle, you have fat, you have bones, tendons, ligaments, connective tissue and a nervous system and blood supply. Exactly what is it that happens when you start looking more toned?
Muscles that look toned have less fat inside and out. Muscles that don't looked toned have more fat inside and out.
So that brings up the next comment I get from a lot of women and some men.
I just want to keep my muscles the same size, but make them more toned.
Here's the thing. What is actually happening when muscles stay the same size but start looking more toned is that people are actually gaining muscle and losing fat. That's what makes them look more toned.
Ok, so why do you talk so much about gaining muscle and don't talk more about losing fat?
I'm going to tell you a big secret.
Are you ready?
Losing fat is hard to do.
Did you get that? Notice, I didn't say, “losing weight is hard to do.” No, losing weight is easy.
Yep, I said it. Losing weight is easy. Fast (that is, go without eathing anything, just drinking water), and you can lose a pound of weight a day. Take a diuretic and you can lose ten pounds of water weight in a day.
Is it safe?
No.
Is it healthy?
No.
Does it work?
No
But you aren't losing fat when you do that.
Now here comes that bad part. When you lose weight that way what are you losing?
Water? That comes back the second you start drinking it again.
But what else do you lose if you aren't losing fat? What does your body go for when it needs energy quickly and you aren't eating anything?
Muscle, that's what.
But is it ok?
It's ok if they don't have to see those people for 5 years and they don't care how they look to the rest of the world the rest of the time. But if they want to make a permanent change it isn't ok.
Here's why your body reacts like this. Imagine your body normally burns 2000 calories a day, but you decide to fast (go entirely without eating) in an effort to lose weight as rapidly as possible.
Guess what your body does immediately? It starts trying to figure out how to slow your metabolism. After all the genes that keep you alive are very similar to the genes that keep every mammal on the planet alive. And this whole hunger strike thing is pretty new to the animal kingdom. But famines are not new, been with animals and mankind for centuries (even, given the strange politics that many people live under, to the present day).
Most people don't realize that a pound of muscle burns 30 to 50 calories a day just to maintain itself.
A pound of fat burns less than a calorie.
The fastest way to lower your metabolism is to start burning muscle as fuel. And that is exactly what the body does in time of famine. It preferentially burns muscle as fuel in order to lower the metabolism.
How much fuel is there in a pound of muscle? About 1500 calories, which is a little more than the daily metabolic demands of a typical woman, a little less than the daily metabolic needs of a typical man.
And that is why losing fat is hard to do.
To lose fat your body must believe that there is no famine, plenty of food to be had, so that it needn't retain fat. And then your metabolism must be high enough to burn fat off. And you know the one common thread to many studies? That is that people who don't get enough sleep don't seem to be able to lose weight, whereas people who get plenty of sleep have an easier time losing weight.
There are many theories, having to do with stress, and other such ideas, but I have a very different one, having to do with survival in the wild.
When is the one time when an animal can have a calorie deficit (metabolism is higher than food intake), yet not eat any food at all, and still not take that as a sign of famine?
How about this, when the animal is asleep? For that reason it is very likely that your sleeping metabolism is even more important than your waking metabolism. The only facet of your sleeping metabolism that you have control over is how much muscle mass you have.
All other things being equal just how much fat would you lose if you burned and extra 300 to 500 calories a day?
How much of that is fat? It's about a pound of fat every ten days, or about three pounds of fat a month.
It isn't fast, but it isn't the yo-yo diet of the month club either. It is a permanent, easily maintained change in your body's metabolism. That's the ticket to permanent change, not just for a class reunion, but for the rest of your life.
Losing fat is something else entirely. And there we can help. Not the quick fix approach of the diet of the month club, but the steady, consistent sure thing approach of a higher metabolism achieved naturally and easily.
We talk about muscle because that is the only thing you can reliably control directly. It is the only thing that works every time on every person. Build muscle and you will increase your metabolism. Increase your metabolism enough and you'll burn fat, even (probably especially) while you sleep.
Notice, I said that a higher metabolism is obtained reliably and easily. I didn't say quickly. It takes time. But at least it isn't doing it in a way that interferes with your life. Now it takes you less time, less attention than ever. And isn't that the real key to a reliable program?
Just like everywhere else in life, short term thinking and actions yield unreliable short term results. Long term thinking and actions yield reliable long term results.
So what do you say to someone who says to you…
But I don't care about muscle, I just want to lose weight, look more toned, and to be fit.
Here's what you say to them,
"If you want to lose fat, look more toned and be fit, you should care about muscle, because that's what works reliably, and permanently."
By the way, almost all of those diets you see, they make no distinction between losing weight and losing fat. And that's a good test for you to use to see if they are speaking from something that will have lasting results or not.
Because losing weight is easy, in the short term.
Losing fat is only easy in the long term when your resting metabolism is high enough to burn fat in your sleep.
Gaining that higher metabolism is easy for you now, with what you know about muscle.
Hopefully this makes it a little easier to explain to people. Go ahead and forward this along to anyone you care about that you've been trying to explain it to.
From the Road:
Here is a story that shows the Power of a Living Reframe:(Contributed by Beryl Comar, U.A.E.)
There was a janitor who worked at a local high school. One day a local group of girls started the ritual of kissing the mirror after they put on their lip stick as they were leaving the restroom.
Cleaning lip stick from the mirror can be a challenge. He asked the girls to stop, and they, of course, ignored him. He tried asking in different ways to no avail. As a last resort he asked for help from office.
The office asked the girls to stop and they were given the response of, “Whatever.” As a last resort, the principle called the girls into the restroom and had the janitor explain the difficulty of cleaning lip stick.
After a detailed explanation, the girls asked “Well isn’t that, like, his job?” and even in a more condescending tone, “Sorry we’re asking him to do his job.”
The principal was starting to explode when the janitor cut him off. “They are right. I will just keep cleaning up after these young ladies.” With that he walked over to the toilet and dipped his rag into the toilet water and then walked over to the mirror and began washing it. The girls never again kissed the mirror!
Sometimes seeing something does more than all the talking in the world!
Techniques and Tips:
Present to Pleasant
By Pierre Benoit
This technique is used to teach people how to deal with verbal abuse. I have developed it when I did training sessions for the people who give out parking tickets for the city of Montreal.
Step 1:
Identify the word or phrase (insult or verbal abuse) which really gets you angry, worked up or out-of-control (meaning reacting to the comment).
Step 2:
Identify its “present” definition. What definition do you give it.
Step 3:
Identify its “pleasant” definition. What would you want it to be. The person needs to be creative and give it whatever definition he or she wants. However, the definition needs to be pleasant and not hilarious. Because if it gets the person laughing, even smiling, it may set fire to the situation.
Step 4:
From now on, when you hear that word or phrase, associate the new definition.
I got very good feedback from the Parking Agents. They even call me up and leave their Pleasant definitions on my answering machine.

Forum:
In our last e-zine, we shared an email from a student, with the idea of creating a “forum environment.” Here is the original question and a response we wanted to share with you.
I have a question for you -- I was working with a musician who had some performance issues. In an attempt to do the “Swoosh” technique (Swish technique with sound), he could not do it visually. In the session I was stumped, that never happened to me before. Later on I realized how aural and kinesthetic he is. We created musical notes that "swooshed" a flat sound to a vibrating one he liked. My question is -- How else can the "swoosh" be adapted if someone is not visual?
In response to your student’s question about using the swish in the auditory and kinesthetic systems:
An auditory swish is demonstrated by Connirae Andreas on our DVD “The Swish Pattern,” available from NLP Comprehensive (which also has a demonstration of the standard swish). http://www.nlpco.com/
There is discussion of the “designer” swish, in which you find out which submodalities (in any modality) work best for a particular person in our book, Change Your Mind, pp. 50-59, including examples of auditory and kinesthetic swish.
The kinesthetic swish, and a review of the essential ingredients of a swish pattern (regardless of modality) is also extensively discussed in an article by that name at: http://www.steveandreas.com/kinesthetic.html
