Something to think about from Dr. Wil Horton

Intro to NLP Today E-Zine

NLP Today E-Zine is a monthly series of articles that will bring you the best information in the world of NLP and Hypnosis. We will bring you articles that have been proven in the real world. Heavy with techniques and information you can use in your daily life, whether it's as a therapist with clients, business or sales, or just for self-development. We will get you the information you want and can't get. We focus on proven applications, not theory. Our trainers all "do the work." This is the difference that makes the difference. We cut the fluff and bring the main course. Mental Food you can use. NFNLP is the leader in this type of technology.

This is a service of the National Federation of NeuroLinguistic Psychology and Dr. Wil Horton. We want people to achieve their highest potential, and NLP is the #1 tool for this. If you feel you have been added to this list in error, check out an issue, and then let us know if you would like to be removed.

You can achieve your dreams.

Captains Chair:

Please accept our apologies for how late this e-zine is this month. It has been a very busy, hectic month with my new hypnosis practice. But in spite of its tardiness, I wanted to share some new ventures with you, so be sure to check our Marketing section of the e-zine.

Hope this Spring finds you well and succeeding at your goals. The month started off fast with a Canada trip to teach a NLP Basic Practitioner class. I would like to welcome the 17 new members to the NFNLP family. It is always a pleasure to see people learn these new skills. It is an honor to be able to teach this wonderful science to such an enthusiastic class. It also sharpens my skills for practical use in my clinic, where I am seeing 50 or so people a week. Naturally the more effective my skills, the better the results.

We also firmed up the training dates for the rest of the year (See the marketing section of this e-zine and check the web site for details.), including a trip to southern California to teach a Basic course. It has been three years since we taught out that direction (mostly teaching on the east coast of the United States) and we’ve decided to expand our training radius to the west coast. If anyone from that area wants to drop in let me know.

Also for your information check out www.nlp-awards.com, Leslie Cameron-Bandler is sponsoring some awards in our field.

On a personal note, I teach the principle that one needs to remain flexible and open to trying new things, and not letting things bother you. Well, as usual, I had to practice what I teach, and I would like to thank all of you who have given me the honor of teaching you NLP/Hypnosis skills. This month I competed in an AAU Karate tournament, and when I got there I was informed that the Cane weapon kata (form) was not allowed at this event. Well, when I first heard it, I had a hissy fit (whatever that is). I was ready to blow off the rest of the tournament and go home. You know, take my ball and go home because I didn’t get my way. As I started to pack up, I thought what would I tell a student, “Go with the flow, have some fun.” and most importantly, “Lighten up.” So, I looked around and saw a SAI (Japanese weapon), and even though I have not practiced with this weapon for awhile I thought, “Why not?” I borrowed a pair and did a quick practice. I then did the New Behavior Generator, and Circle of Excellence with the Fear into Power. It’s amazing how powerful the combination of those three techniques can be! I did better in this event (winning a gold medal) than the other two competitions I entered into (which I had been practicing daily for.) Wow, this stuff works!

For those of you who are into the business/consulting side of NLP/Hypnosis, NFNLP has arrainged for its members to be considered for a special training offered by Richard Harte, lead trainer for the National Guild of Hypnotists. Dr Harte has developed a consulting business based on his best selling book. He takes Hypnosis and NLP into the corporate world with great results. He is offering a training to teach people his methodology. I am impressed with how he has set it up as a low risk venture. IT IS NOT AN EASY CLASS TO ATTEND. EVERYONE MUST BE SCREENED! This lets one know it is for real. For the complete proposal and how to contact Dr. Harte, go to www.nfnlp.com/consulting opportunity, then let me know if you are interested.

Theory into Practice:

This month I highly recommend that you check out these two web sites and journal article:

The first site has a series of articles on mirror neurons. This is the type of info that will take our field to the next level. The basic research says that when a monkey (whose brains are very similar to ours) performs a single, highly specific action with its hand: pushing pulling, tugging grasping, picking up something and putting it in it’s mouth, different neurons fire in response to different tasks. It is tempting to think that these are motor neurons that command muscles to do certain things, however the amazing truth is that any given mirror neuron will also fire when the monkey in question observes another monkey (or the experimenter) performing the same action. This is the key to RAPPORT, empathy, mind reading, and learning! For more go to:

www.edge.org/3rd_culture/ramachandran/ramachandran_p2.html

The second site has a PERCEPTUAL (attentional) BLINDNESS article.

You are watching a one-minute video of two teams of 3 players each, wearing white shirts and black shirts, moving around each other fast in a small room, tossing two basketballs. Your task is to count the number of passes made by the white team. After 35 seconds, a person in a gorilla suit comes into view, walking through the moving bodies, thumps his chest, and exits 9 seconds later.

Do you see the gorilla? Only 50% of viewers see the gorilla, even when asked about it later, and when the tape is rewound and shown again, many of these viewers accuse the experimenter of deception. Conclusion: when most, or all, of your 7 +/- 2 chunks of attention is focused on a task, you don't even see--much less remember--much of anything else.

(Scientific American March, 2004, p. 42.)

Could we use this in our hypnosis techniques?

Also check out the article from “Doctors Without Borders, Why we can’t trust Medical Journals Anymore” by Shannon Brownlee. This one opens ours eyes to conflict of interest in the world of research for all medications. It seems that a lot of the research is done by people having a vested interest in proving the medications work. Like owning stock in the company, or worse, knowing the study was funded by the company that makes the drugs in question, with other research money pending! This also leads one to wonder about the rush for new psycho-tropic (mental) medications.

“This reminds me of a story” (“My favorite line in NLP.” Enjoy, Wil Horton):

The Treasure Chest: An Inspirational Story

From Beryl Comar of Dubai, UAE

A man dies and finds himself at the gates of Heaven. An angel approaches him and tells him that she is his guardian angel and is there to give him a Grand Tour of the Kingdom of Heaven.

After hours of experiencing the beauty and majesty of Heaven, he noticed one door that he had not seen.

He asked the Angel, "What's behind that door?"

The Angel replied, "Oh...you don't want to see what's behind there."

The man answered, "Yes I do...please show me what's behind that door."

The Angel hesitantly answered, "Ok...but I warned you."

The angel removed a key from her white gown and unlocked the door. The man turned the knob and entered to find a vast room filled with treasure chests. Large ones... Small ones... Square ones....Round ones.

The man asked the Angel, "What are all of these chests?"

The Angel answered, "Well...everyone who comes to heaven has a chest of theirs that we keep in this room."

The man asked, "Do I have a Treasure Chest?"

The Angel answered, "Yes...you do."

"Can I see what's my chest?" The man asked.

"Oh...," the Angel hesitantly replied, "You don't want to see your chest."

"Oh yes I do, "The man demanded, "Please show me my chest."

So, the Angel led the man through what seemed like miles and miles of Treasure Chests until they came to one that measured nine feet long by six feet wide and twelve feet high.

"My God, " the man exclaimed, "It's enormous. What inside?"

"Oh..." the Angel warned, "You do not want to see what is inside."

"Yes I do," The man exclaimed, "Show me what's inside."

The Angel hands the man a key. The man takes the key and finds a ladder leaned up against the treasure chest. He climbs the ladder and inserts the key in a keyhole at the top. As he turned the key, something clicked inside and the great door of the chest lifted. The man looked inside to find what was thousands and thousands of pieces of paper that seemed like written lists of some kind.

"What is all this?" the man asked the Angel.

The Angel sighed and answered, "These are all the things you could have had when you were alive...if only you had asked."

Technique and Tips:

The Magic Balloon

By Martin Larsen

1. Take a nice deep breath and close your eyes.

2. Now I would like you to go inside yourself for a moment and start to feel that unpleasant feeling that you were telling me about before.

3. When you are having it, please nod your head for me.

4. Now I want you to concentrate all that feeling into your stomach and make it strong as possible.

5. Now imagine that you are taking a balloon and give it a color that matches the feeling. Give the balloon a shape that you like.

6. Now I want you to blow all the unpleasant feeling into the balloon. There is space for all of it. Make the balloon wide and big as possible. When you are sure that all of the unpleasant feeling is into the balloon, I want you to bind a knot on it, let go of the balloon and watch the wind carrying it away from you.

7. Now I want you to try to find that old feeling. The more you try to find it, the more it will be gone. When you are ready to come back, you may open your eyes.

“The Word Switch” Technique

By Edwin Brand

I have been cross country skiing for quite some time now and I still own the original boots and bindings that I purchased over 20 years ago. While out on the trail I have notice through the years that no one uses the type of boots and bindings that I have, any more. It has indeed made me fill a bit self conscious because every one else seems to have the newer/fancier boots and bindings and mine are, bit old fashioned. This year the sole of my old fashioned boots tore off and I needed to by a replacement pair. I thought this would be a great opportunity to upgrade to the newer and fancier style boots. After searching the internet for just the right pair I found a combo boot/binding that I really liked, and had then decided on them. Before making the actual purchase I was navigating through the website and came upon the same boots that I had owned for so many years and I began to read the description. It read “for the cross country PURISTS”. Suddenly everything changed. I now wanted to purchase the same old fashioned boots that had caused me to feel self conscious for all these years. It wasn’t until a few moments later that I had realized what had happened. It was one word that changed my whole outlook on my old fashioned boots. It did not change the fact that they were old fashioned, it just gave a new meaning making “old fashioned” acceptable. The word was PURIST. Its nice to feel like a purist. This experience caused me to think of ways that I could use this technique to help others. It seems to be a very powerful yet simple technique.

Technique

1) Ask the client to describe their deficiency or inadequacy.

2) Find the key word that they use in that description.

3) Replace that key word with an alternative word that has a reverse effect from the original word. (It is important at this time to choose a word that will match their submodality. So if they used a “visual” word you must also use a visual word. The same would be true for auditory and kinesthetic.

4) Ask them to repeat their phrase several times, each time, you repeat your revised phrase.

5) After several attempts they will modify their phrase to be the same as yours. (if they have not, simply ask them to).

6) Test for results.
