"That was really stupid!"

Author Unknown

Karen, a 44 year old divorced female, described how she'd been plagued by feelings of inadequacy as long as she could remember because she's always believed she was dumb/stupid.

After doing some information gathering, it wasn't hard to figure out where this belief came from. Karen stated that her earliest memory of feeling dumb was when she was seven years old and she was spending time with her mother. She had made a mistake with what she was doing and her mother said in a very authoritative voice "THAT WAS REALLY STUPID!" From that time on she had been plagued the by the sound of her mothers voice telling her that she was stupid (which is the message she had gotten from her mother's comment).

I asked Karen to assume a comfortable position and to close her eyes. Next, I asked her to recall her mother saying those words to her. I then had her to move the voice away from her into. As if it was coming from the next room over. I asked if this sounded any different to her, and she said it sounded a little softer and not quite as threatening. I then asked her to move the voice even further away, into a room all the way down the Hall. She stated that the voice sounded even less threatening now. Next, I had her play with the voice. I had had her turn the voice into a seductive voice and experience it in a different way. I then had her turn the voice into a cartoon character voice. I changed these around several times, and eventually to the point where she had a smile on her face. I ask her to hear the voice in the original way (her moms voice) and she was unable to. This made her extremely happy and as she left she walked with a new-found pride and believe in herself.
