The Micro-Managing Boss By Jim A. My “boss” micro-manages at times. This used to irritate me when I first started working for him last November. You see, he hired me knowing I had years of experience, yet for some reason thought it necessary to question, guide and direct even the most minute detail After many instances of me becoming upset (almost or perhaps on an identity level), I realized the obvious… if what I am doing is not working, do something else. So... I asked my self: how do I want to feel? What state will be useful in this context? The state I came up with was a mixture of curiosity, excitement and interest...perhaps mixed with a bit of “A hah! I am in control or your ass is mine”... Then, imagined the scenarios (in my mind, as if they can be imagined somewhere else!), with my boss micro managing and me being very excited, interested and curious... over and over, then future paced. Then, practiced when it occurred. Now...when he attempts to micro manage, that state or similar states come up, I smile inside, turn to him like the puma or the hulk, smile outwardly and share my interest and excitement while commenting on his statements or asking how I can help. |
