Goal Setting, Non-Optional for Success

By John W. Scorza

I recently participated in a four day NFNLP Trainers Training Seminar presented by Dr. Will Horton. This highly interactive meeting utilized many of the key tenants of NLP. Since the seminar and armed with my newly enlightened perspective, I have gone back to re-read certain books that over the years had a major impact on the way I view the world. One such book, Imagineering by Michael LeBouef was published over two decades ago and was written to help people discover the untapped powers of their minds(what a concept). As I read through the pages I couldn't help but reflect one of the assignments given by Dr. Horton....... each of us were allowed two days to identify five key individual goals(business, personal, physical). Visualizing our own future Time Line, the intent was to place them as key goals for achievement. Surprisingly, it was very apparent that as a group, it was a cumbersome process to clearly identify and articulate just what goals we planned to accomplish and within what timeframe.

A clear positive mental attitude is a necessary asset to achievement. And the very foundation of a positive outlook is contained in goal setting. When you set goals for yourself you make a commitment to optimism by deciding to take steps that will ensure more success for you. Admittedly, few of us make the effort and take the time to sit back and give serious thought as to what we want out of our lives.

"It's easier to ignore the future and let tomorrow take care of itself", certainly isn't the hallmark of successful people. And I acknowledge that becoming overly concerned with the future can keep us from enjoying the present. However, not recognizing the vast potential of the future makes you a slave to it rather than it's master. Decisions about your future are an opportunity to control your future.

There is a wealth of information readily available(books, CDs, the Web) that can provide effective guidelines for identifying, developing and setting goals. Once you've determined your personal goals, I would strongly encourage you to embrace and employ the powerful techniques of NLP to improve your own future successes.

Please reflect on the following..... goals should be considered in light of each other. With this Goal Congruency, the achieving of one goal can be key to increasing your motivation and commitment to achieving another and will provide the momentum to reach the next objective. H.E. Fosdick wrote, "Great living starts with a picture held in your imagination of what you would like to do or be." Certainly, there is more to achieving a goal than simply imagining success. However, you have to think success before you can experience it and visualization is critical to that end. The seeds of great achievement are almost always sown in great vision.

"Time is like a snowflake, it disappears while you're trying to decide what to do with it"
